Paco has a severe case of “dragon breath”. His teeth look clean, no plaque build-up, but each time he yawns i hold my nose! Im not sure if it’s his food… i just noticed it this past week… but maybe it is? I give him “Breathies” kitty treats that are formulated to help with bad breath but it doesnt seem to be working. It’s like Chicken Jerky with mint extract in it. Thoughts?

I would pay a vet visit if it persists.

I started noticing Eko had bad breath before he even turned one. It is only recently (he’s almost 2) that I remembered to ask the vet to look at his teeth (somehow he is the one cat she forgot to check, and I forgot to ask at his one year check.) Anyways, he has major tartar build up for his age and will need a cleaning soon. So, in his case bad breath was definitely a clue that he had dental problems brewing. Can you see his back teeth? I couldn’t without the vet’s help and that is where Eko’s problems were.

We’ve been trying to establish toothbrushing but it isn’t going that well. I’ve also been buying some dental chews that are different from most dental treats in that they are large and chewy so that the cats actually have to rip and tear into them with their teeth. They are called CET oral hygiene chews for cats. Eko’s breath has gotten better so I’m hoping they will help with his dental health too. Here’s a link….

Even if you don’t see a tartar build up, he could have an infected tooth. I would say a vet visit would be the best thing to do.

Vet is always a good idea. But if it isn’t anything severe, there is a water additive that helps cut down on plaque. It is at most pet stores like petco, or online at 1800 petmeds. Its in a greenish bottle, and it doesn’t hurt your pet. You might ask your vet about this.

Thank you all for your information and advice. I throughly looked at Paco’s teeth and gums, nothing looked red, inflamed, bleeding, broken… he wasnt in pain when i checked. hes not in pain when he eats and he eats dry food, but i may try to get him in just to make sure everything is fine. i did notice that he has a couple teeth coming in though! big boy!! so excited to see how big he’s going to be! I love watching kitties grow and seeing their little personalities fully develop!

It could be a sinus infection. A vet check is warranted though. Unless he’s just eaten his breath shouldn’t stink.

Just an update, I talked with my vet and she let me know that when kittens start teething, they will tend to have bad breath and reddish gums and that it is nothing i should be alarmed about. She also said that he is really too young to have abcesses or gum disease just yet. I am brushing his teeth now (which he LOVES the chicken toothpaste) and it seems to help slightly. Thought i would update yall so any kitten owners dont worry severly about a kittens stinky breath. It should pass as they finish teething. She said that if it doesnt clear up when he gets his big boy teeth, then we will do x-rays. But for now, hes just a normal furball!

Getting him use to the toothbrush now, while he is young, is an excellent idea. You will save yourself lots of money later in kitty dental costs.

its almost like he brushes them himself! i try to brush and he chews on it like a chew toy to get all the toothpaste out then wants to drink the water i rinse it out in! hes very goofy =)
