Since Willow has been diagnosed with IBD which is apparently due to food allergy I have been doing much research on what diet I should feed him. Even though his diarehia and vomiting is better he is constantly hungry. He constantly cries for food and I don’t know what to do. THe vet said it’s because he lost weight with all his vomiting and so now he’s starving. Anyway, I read that it’s okay to feed cats uncooked chicken wings. Apparently the bones are good for them. Does anyone else do this? I’m scared Willow will choke. Although I did see him eat a whole mouse once and he seemed fine. Do you think it’s okay for a Devon Rex to eat chicken wings?

The bones are supposedly soft enough for them to eat when they aren’t cooked. FF50 has put out something about this before but can’t remember when.

Hope that your Willow gets better soon.

JessiJ, I think it’s fine, I know many people who feed their cats cooked chicken wings and I used to give big chicken bones to my Max, he loved to crunch the ends off and then suck out the bone marrow (eurrrrrgh). Just keep an eye on him while he’s eating them if you’re worried. If he could crunch the ends off the big ones, I’m sure your Willow could manage the little ones…

But, just to be on the safe side, first aid website with instrux for choking…. http://www.avma.org/firstaid/procedures.asp

Velvet would steal chicken bones that were in the garbage can. i finally gave up and gave them to her after i finished my meal (she got some of the chicken too). she was a happy cat, she liked KFC…

Tee hee, they usually do like chicken, and since kittens arrive at Christmas time here, many of them grow up on turkey leftovers… (not the bones though, they’re a little bit young for those…)

No, not cooked chicken wings!!! When they are cooked they lose the marrow and moisture, and splinter when crunched, becoming a choking hazard. Chicken wings are great to serve to cats, but only RAW. Then the bone is flexible and soft, and cats can gnaw their way into the juicy marrow, and their digestion can process the bone and its excellent calcium etc just fine. Don’t feed whole bones more than a couple of times a week though, as the excess calcium can cause constipation, and other imbalances.

Oh please don’t feed your kitties cooked chicken wings. As ELENIKI, raw only.

Yes raw only. Mine LOVE the bone marrow 🙂 It is best to feed a meal with bone along with a bit of liver to avoid constipation.

As Eleniki said, I had heard that with cooked chicken wings the bones splinter possibly causing a choking hazard for the cat. Do not feed them this, please.

I heard chicken necks can be fed to cats, I think raw or cooked as those bones are different and ok for them. I gave mine a couple vertebraes each, cooked and they loved them. But, the next day the neck bones seemed tough so I threw them out. I even warmed them up in broth, they couldn’t chew them.

Personally I don’t see the reason to even feed cooked meat to cats. It kills so many nutrients and cats are made to eat raw meat so why cook it?

I feed mine chicken necks at least once a week, actually that is what they are getting tonight. They love them!

I didn’t know that raw chicken bones were safe for cats. I’d heard that cats should never be given chicken bones because they splinter and can puncture the digestive tract, but I never saw it specified before that this is true only for cooked bones.

I feed all mine raw and they are all great with eating bones. Actually they LOVE bones…to bad it can only be 10% of their total food.

When feeding raw bones are a very important part of it.

You know, that just makes sense, because cats who feed themselves through hunting eat everything–they don’t remove the bones from their prey.

I have fed the farm cats feeder mice before and they don’t even seem to bother to chew. The couple cats that got them ate them in a minute or less.

It would be a really wierd site to see a boneless mouse…how would they move?

Yes Leeny, only the cooked bones are potentially dangerous for furkins. Loving your gorgeous blue-eyed beauty, FF – who is s/he? (looks more like a he to me)

Only the most grumpy cat ever…if I am late feeding him he will be mad. I wonder if he was the one who had that great idea of dropping cat toys on me from the haymow. Anyway, that is Blizzard and he is a he. I have never petted him before except for once last month – I don’t know what got into him but he was rubbing against me legs.
