What are the best/funniest cat names you’ve ever encountered?

For me, credit for inspiration goes to my uncle, who lives with my aunt on a cul-de-sac in what was (in my not-THAT-distant childhood) a small town in the country, but is now a full-fledged suburb of Atlanta. Being convenient yet remote meant that their street was a frequent dumping ground for unwanted kittens, most of whom found their way to my aunt’s screened porch. At any given time there were never fewer than a dozen cats living there, with gusts of up to 30.

At one of those peak-kitten-occupancy periods, my uncle came home from work to encounter a new, tiny black kitten (obvious because no kitten heretofore had been said color). My uncle, who has never liked cats but indulges my aunt in everything, roared “Another cat?!? Dammit!”

The blackie kept the moniker “Dammit” the rest of his life and was a favorite of us kids because we could ask for it by name and couldn’t get in trouble!

Hah! Reminds me of a time when a friend of my mother’s had finally decided that as her work travel demands were increasing, her vet could no longer foist all the injured/found/homeless cats on her. She’d keep her existing gang, but no more new ones.

So about six weeks after the last one died of old age, a storm brought a tiny wisp of shivering wet fur to her back porch. As she looked out and saw the little guy, she groaned, “Lord, not again!” So the cat acquired the name “Lord Nottigin.”

My grandmother had a cat she named “Tasmanian Devil”. Taz came to us one day when my boyfriend (now roommate/ex-boyfriend), who was renting a room at my grandmother’s house at the time, and a friend of his found this skinny, scrawny little grey kitten up in the foothills where they had been hiking. My roommate’s idea was to see if my mom or somebody else wanted the kitten and he wasn’t too happy when my grandmother wanted to keep Taz instead because he thought there were too many cats in the house already. Considering two of the cats were his and two were mine, I felt that it was about time that my grandmother had another cat of her own. Besides, it was her house so he had no say in the matter. So Taz stayed.

Taz got the name Tasmanian Devil because, once he recovered from having nearly starved to death and got used to his new home, he became a whirlwind of trouble! He never grew very big and, during the time we had him, always looked like he was about 6 months old. But trouble sometimes comes in small packages. He was such a little troublemaker that, whenever we heard any kind of commotion – a cat fight, something falling(usually something big falling), sounds of breaking glass, the garbage can being tipped over.. etc… we would simply yell, “TAZ WHAT ARE YOU DOING??!!!” and Taz would usually appear from the general vicinity of the noise.

Unfortunately Taz’ time with us was all too brief. Not long after my grandmother passed away, Taz disappeared. I think he was about 1 1/2 years old when he vanished. But he gave us a lot of entertainment in that short period of time.

One of my cats is named Jimmy the Weasel. He was very skinny and weaselly looking when he was found, but the name was from a skit of an old cartoon from about 10 years ago called Dr. Katz. Dr. Katz was a psychiatrist and Ray Romano played a patient who talked about his grandfather naming his toes “Fat Tony” and “Jimmy the Weasel.” We thought it was hysterical.

Another cat is named 120 because my ex grabbed him from that highway as a stray kitten.

Toula is named after Tallulah Bankhead. Boy has she lived up to that name–she is a little prima donna beeotch.

Lucky was on his last day at Cobb County animal control when we adopted him.

Tristan was named after the Brad Pitt character in Legends of the Fall.

Boo Radley is afraid of everything and a little crazy, but harmless.

Teensie’s orginal name was Minnaloushe from the poem, but he never grew too much and my kids could never remember what his name was.

Wolfie loves to attack and bite stuff. Plus our last name is Wolven and I thought Wolfgang Wolven was funny. (I used to threaten my poor father-in-law every time I was pregnant that I was going to name the baby Wolfgang.)

I had a cat we called Kazoo, because that’s what she sounded like.

We had a pair of brown tabbies: Bonnie and Clyde.

I name my purebreds after artists, so I had a mama cat we called Trekkie – Her name was Tee LaTrec. And we kept her daughter who we never showed, hence: Shuttle.

When one of my granddaughters was little we adopted a throw-away cat who was a long-haired orangie. I let her name him and she (at the age of 3) named him Marmalade after her favorite jam. One day she caught me giving him heck for being on the counter and I was yelling “Get off there you Fuzz-head! Well she had trouble saying her F’s at the time so he became “Puzzhead”. My ex still has that cat and he is still Puzzhead and it has been 10 years!

When I was a little girl, we lived in Malawi (Central Africa), and we adopted a tiny 5 week old black kitten, who’d been hurled out of a car window (he somehow made his way up to where parents collected their kids from my school, and, not wanting to hold up the flow of traffic, Mum rapidly acquiesed to my pleas of *oh please Mummy, Mummy, can we take him home!!).

Anyway, I named him Mischief. Nothing too unusual about that I hear you say, and you’re quite right. However, if ever a cat lived up to his name, it was Mischief, and his favourite trick was to run up the sunfilter curtains – remember them? Very popular in the 70’s, and very unforgiving of a kitten’s claws. Pulled threads galore. We used to scold him in the local language Chichewa, as he was a Malawian moggy.

*wana wa impagga wachabi quambiri* – very naughty kitten (with apolgies for spelling if anyone recognises this!)

We left Malawi at the end of 1979, and Mischief came with us. A few weeks after joining us back at home after 6 very long months in quarantine, he was playing about, and knocked something over. Mum scolded him – in Chichewa – and he shot her a look *well if you’re going to be like THAT* – and scooted up the nearest pair of curtains!!

I think I’ve told this story in abbreviated form before, so apologies for the duplication, but I thought it worth repeating in its entirety!!

My daughter, “Ladybug,” thinks our house cats are very appropriately named. Linus and Lucy are littermates. Lucy is as thin and lithe as Linus is large and lazy. Linus lives for only three things (in this order): eating, sleeping, and being cuddled. Lucy, on the other hand, is a fussbudget who is most insistent on getting her way and has a temper to match the proportion of pointy sides to non-pointy. When they were kittens, Linus started the fights but Lucy finished them.

Enter this past May our 8-wk-old new addition whom we named Sally. Baby Sally Semi-meezer ADORES Linus, her Sweet Babboo (“I’m NOT your ‘Sweet Babboo,'” Linus would retort if he could). Sally gives Linus no end of grief, insisting on either cuddling him or attacking him. I’ll put it this way: if you didn’t know better, you’d think that Sally was the male, Linus was the female, and neither one was “fixed”! Linus is torn between the overwhelming need to find a place where Sally can’t get to him and the inescapable drive to expend as little energy as possible.

Any other fan of “Peanuts” would agree that these three are aptly named indeed!

One bright, brisk and blustery wet morning in autumn ’95 I opened my trailer door in Friday Harbor to go chop wood for my stove and in minutes was adopted by a scraggly but majestic orange&white female homesteader I named Leah. Though 100% feral, she quickly ensconced herself in a cardboard box in the crawlspace beneath. I was soon to learn why as 4.5mo. later in spring she delivered 4 beautiful calico girls I dubbed Zoe,Angel,Meagan and Gwen(dolyn).(Never fear, they all got neutered, but that’s another hilarious tail 4 later.) Zoe’s a grey/white amazonian alpha female w/a soft heart.Angel a white w/orange&brown markings(most outgoing & tree-climbing champ.)Meagan, shy but sweet dark brown bit of orange and white(holds the world’s land-speed record). And finally Gwen, sadly the sickliest, mostly white w/a lil’orange/brown going on. All were fearless survivor/outdoor meezers thanks to Mom,no raccoon could ever sneak up on them and we had plenty in my neck o’the woods.

Years ago, our neighbors got a cat called Monkey. I always thought that was a strange name for a cat – until I got one of my own! We are always telling Tikka what a little monkey she is. And when I look back on what a character little Monkey was, I realize the name was perfect!

People always crack up when I tell them I have a cat named Rattlesnake (Snake, for short). It’s because of the patterned tail and the slow way he twitches it. It’s great fun playing with his name, too — the other day we had a Snake in the linen closet.

He’s also the cuddliest d*** Snake I’ve ever known!

Love the stories, gang. It’s always great fun naming cats.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’ve enjoyed some of the cat names I’ve come up with.

There was Karma… sometimes she was Good Karma, other times she was Bad Karma.

Keph was named after a character in a book (Kephias was the name of the character).

Odd was the name of an odd-eyed white cat with red van markings.

Therefore, when a white cat with same-color eyes and black van markings showed up, his name became Even.

My dad named a black & white kitten Spindacular (combination of Spin and spectacular, which is what he did best).

There was Bunky, short for Carbunculus, named for the rusty-red undercoat under a dull black topcoat (when he arrived, seriously malnourished and very thin).

But my favorite was Booger, also known as the Boogerman, Boogerboy, the Boogermonster, the Boogermeister, the Hooded Avenger, the Masked Avenger, and Butthead. He was the smartest cat I ever had, very much a ‘mama’s boy,’ and had a black mask, white chops, and a tiny black mark coming out of one nostril. After I saw his marking, what *else* was I supposed to call him?!?

At the shelter I worked at there was a cat named “Fig” as he was so elusive and timid as he was rarely seen. It’s short for Figment of the imagination.

Tiger us usually called TigerButt or Tig Tig! We called him Ti, but my granddaughter’s name is Tia and she was getting confused. She’s only 4 so it’s easy to see how that happened.

Had a cute kitten when I was in high school we named John Boy, because my mentally challenged sister loved the Waltons so much. Mom dropped him off for neutering, and later that day recieved a phone call from the vet who said he was sorry, he couldn’t neuter John Boy, but wanted to make sure it was okay to spay her. We decided to not change her name and she remained John Boy until the day she died.

One of my cats is named Tweek for the South Park character who is a bit spazzy because of coffee. My little brother gave him the name.

It ended up fitting him perfectly with regards to the coffee. Soon after we brought him home, we got a new coffee machine that you could program to brew in the morning. It sounded a little different so every morning at 6:30, he would rush from wherever he was in the house to watch the coffee brew.

Eventually, the coffee machine novelty wore off, but every morning when I have my coffee, he “loafs” on the table in front of me for morning pettins while I drink my coffee.

Nora’s real name is Le Noir (everyone pronounces it like Lenore). She is not all black, but she had a brother who was all white and his name was Le Blanc. Nora is a very dark tabby. They were my sister-in-law’s cats; Nora now lives with me and Le Blanc went to live with another family.

Nibs is actually Nabby. When she is in a goofy mood I call her Abby Normal (after a certain scene in a certain movie which is one of my favorites).
