Hi! This is my first post to TDK but I have been reading on here for a few weeks.
I just got some foster kittens from a shelter a couple of weeks ago, and one of them has some white flecks on his fur. I did some research and many people say that that means he has fleas. He hasn’t been scratching himself, he didn’t have fleas when we got him from the shelter and I can’t see any black flecks(maybe because he has black fur). Does anyone know what’s going on? I think that maybe he’s just dirty and needs a bath so I’ll do that later, but I still want a second opinion since this is my first time fostering kittens.

If a kitten has fleas (they are hard to detect on a black cat or kitten) you can see flea dirt, which is their poop, when you part the fur on their tummies or down between their legs where it’s warm. Fleas like moisture too, so they collect around the eyes, nose, mouth and ears.

Also black kittens have little white flecks on their fur if they have dry skin, kind of like dandruff.

They other thing that is concerning to me is that he could have lice. They don’t come off easily when you pull gently on the hair. What you are seeing are actually the eggs of the lice (nits) that the lice attach to the hair of the kitten. If you do not know what to look for, then the best thing is to take your kitten to the vet and let them diagnose your kitten and see if it has lice, then you can get something to treat them.
