I wasn’t sure if I should post this in purrs or cafe but seeing as I’m looking for advice I’ll just post here.
I have two 4 week old kittens that I have been bottle feeding. And I’m finally getting them to also eat some wet kitten food. I mix up their formula and add 1 tsp of canned food to each of their dishes (I finally got them to eat from a dish! :D) Should I add 2 tsp each instead? On the can it says 1 oz per lb of body weight, and from what I can gather 6 tsp is 1 oz, so if I feed them 1 tsp 3 times a day that’s only half what the can says they need, as they are 1 lb each. (Unless I’m wrong on the conversion) The brand is NutriSource: chicken, turkey, lamb, & fish(which I would have preferred it not to include fish). Is this a good brand? I spent way too much time in my local pet store today making sure to read all of the labels and this was the only one that wasn’t full of vegetables, grain, or carrageenan.(though it does list brown rice flour, dried kelp, alfalfa meal, and yucca schidigera extract. whatever that is.) I’ll eventually add more wet food and less formula but I’m not sure how much I need to be adding.
Also, the can lining is white, I read somewhere that that could be bad as its better if the lining was something else I cant remember exactly..
Oh, and how long does canned food last in the fridge. The cans I bought are the 5 oz ones as they didn’t come in the smaller size :/

Actually I feed them 4 times a day, I feed them once at night. So every 6 hours. Still that’s only 4 tsp each kitten. Once I get them completely off formula should I stick with 1 oz per every 1 lb?

    Adina,

Concats on getting them to eat from bowls. I don’t really pay attention to instructions when feeding kittens. I feed them as much as they will eat because they know when their wee tummies are full. This eliminates the feeling you’re “starving” them. Wellness Kitten food comes in wet and Dry formulas. It is chicken based and a very good quality brand. This makes it easier to transition to adult formula because Wellness has a number of adult formulas. Also, you might consider introducing them to dry food in the evening.

    Good Luck

bump for a few more answers to my above questions.
also on a slightly unrelated note I’ve been looking at switching my 2 adult cats to canned food and so far I really like what I see with Tiki Cat, though I’m not excited about the prices. I was able to email them and ask about samples and a very nice woman emailed me back saying they don’t normally send out samples but because of my situation (I have 4 that will eventually be on wet food and because the prices are a little high I want to make sure they even like the food) that she would send me a few cans to try. I told her that I’m mainly interested in the chicken flavors and that I wanted to avoid carrageenan. Which she replied with “We do not use carrageenan in any of our products”
Is this a new ingredient change? Because I keep reading that some of their flavors do include it but those could just be old posts. If that’s the case I like this brand even more now. My only thing I don’t really like is it is apparently made in Thailand. (though atleast at a human food factory and with USDA certified chicken.)

I hope that some TDKer’s with more experience/expertise will be able to answer you. For myself I asked vet to advise on a whole bunch of things when I brought my kit in for first check-up and following advice have changed food as he left kittenhood. If it is at all possible this is what I’d recommend as would assume they’d need a vet check, initial shots etc. anyway and this would be the time to ask all your questions.
