So the fleas are pretty much sorted, just having issues getting Gizmo’s weight back up, he’s drinking a lot of kitten milk, and he is eating a bowl of food, also given them worming treatment, but we’re still not sure what’s going on? Hoping to solve this without an expensive trip to the vets, any ideas?

Hi Becki, glad to hear the fleas are under control. If Gizmo also has worms (very common with kittens from what I understand), he may need to get rid of the worms before he can gain the weight back. Many small meals might be easier to digest than one larger meal…

He’s been eating smaller meals and we’ve been giving him little treats as well, and I have wormed them, maybe I should worm them again? At least Gizmo is up and around and being as active as a well kitten, it’s just his weight.

too much medicine in an inappropriate may either not help the situation or worsen things. a better alternative would be to feed him the smaller meals frequently, as he will take them. also, some kitten formula may help a bit. you can also cook up some chop meat like hamburger or something and give him a bit to see if he’ll take it. it may take time for him to gain the weight back, as he may have other issues. does he show symptoms of nausea or anything that may denote some stomach issues? i’d look into that, in case he contracted lymes disease or the fleas biting has caused him such discomfort.

Just wondering how many weeks is he now?

It’s normally recommended to wait at least 2-4 weeks between worming treatments especially in a kitten..

If you do wanna work him again wait a little while and make sure to by a wormer from your vets they are more effective than store bought ones.. Some parasites do need a second dose of wormer to kill them off some can be persistant..

Also if he’s over 4 weeks try adding L-lysine to his diet it helps control the feline herpes virus (if present) and as an added benefit improves the coat and really helps them gain weight .. If he’s under 12 weeks half a 500mg tablet crushed in his food in the morning and another half in the evening is great and if he’s over 12 weeks then one whole tablet crushed in one meal a day is good..

Also to kill off the ones that hatched from eggs since the last time.
