I know what you mean, AV. It’s a year since we lost Rincewind, and Merlin still sometimes gazes wistfully out of the window, hoping . . . hoping . . . I know he’s been missing his Big Brother, but it’s amazing to watch him getting along with this new friend. Rincewind was nearly all white – this one is nearly all black. But the kindness, the willingness to share seats, dishes, even food is so much like the way Rincewind once welcomed Merlin into his own life, where he had been the only one for quite a few years.
It really touches my heart to see these two just accepting each other now. I walked into the living room earlier on and there they were, sitting side by side on the sofa. At other times they’ll both be on the table in the conservatory, keeping watch over the garden. But when it’s time to go, White Legs (okay – my private name for him is BJ!) will go to the front door and ask – politely, but definitely – for a way out. He always has a quick thank-you-for-having-me moment first, and I always tell him I’ll see him again soon. And then, I’ll open the door, and off he’ll go.
