Hello! This is my first time caring for a kitten this young, so I may just be being paranoid, but i need some reassurance.

We recently took in a little boy, he was found outside with his brother. He’s about 5-6 weeks old and we took him to the vet yesterday and he got an initial distemper (I think?) shot and a dewormer, but otherwise seemed in good shape.

We were feeding him formula via syringe, and just now began weaning him onto a wet food slurry. He ate some last night and devoured it this morning/this afternoon. The canned food i used is a grain free pate, but it’s not a kitten formula (haven’t had a chance to grab one yet!). He hadn’t eaten for a few hours and suddenly began crying and vomited mostly clear liquid, with one solid looking piece of food. (We have other cats, I think he may have gotten to their kibble haha). He’s currently napping on my chest and purring and seems to be okay, so I’m wondering if it was just the one piece of food he was kind of struggling with (it really wasn’t chewed, but fairly small pieces) or just his sensitive tum getting used to the new food? He was otherwise active and playing around before throwing up.

He is peeing in the litter box, but we haven’t gotten a poop from him yet. We’ve only had him for three nights, and yesterday the vet said he wasn’t constipated so it’s a situation of he’ll go when something’s gotta go.

I’m about to go out and grab some kitten specific sensitive food for him, and I will try feeding him a slurry in a bit. Just wondering if others have experienced something similar or if it’s normal. Thank you!!

He also keeps licking around his mouth like there’s something on/in/around his mouth but there isn’t. I checked and he doesn’t have any food or anything stuck in his mouth or throat, so I’m not sure if he’s going to continue getting sick or not.

    Victoria,

You don’t need to worry about it being kitten food for now. I’m inclined to believe it was the one kibble that he couldn’t digest. Clear liquid vomit is a sign that the cat is bringing up fluid from the digestive tract, which is often stomach juice. Occasionally, if the kitty is vomiting right after drinking a large amount of water, he will also vomit clear liquid —namely, the water they just drank. Most of the time, however, what we are seeing when we look at that sticky puddle of clear liquid on the paper towel is stomach fluid mixed with some mucus from the esophagus.

A kit shouldn’t go more than 4 days without a poop. Here’s a video on how to help him. Sometimes, they get hard turds and can’t poop them out. In which case, the vet will need to give him and enema. You DON’T try and give him an enema.

You may want to call the vet and ask them about what you have written here and see if his vomiting and excessive licking could be a reaction to any of the medications he was given. Sometimes a dewormer can cause a digestive upset along with their first shots. I think I would keep the kibbles away from him and just let him have his wet food slurry (I’ve raised lots of kittens and just used regular canned pate’ style cat food not just for kittens). Would he not take a bottle? Since you mentioned that you fed him formula through a syringe. Kittens usually aren’t fully weaned until they are 8 to 10 weeks old.

Thank you both!! I was also inclined to think it was just the kibble he got ahold of, but of course I panicked. We were actually given a syringe instead of a bottle from a friend who fosters kittens frequently, so we just used that for him.
I’ve tried a few methods to help stimulate him, but still nothing. He doesn’t seem to be ‘trying’ and in pain though. The people who have his brother just messaged me today saying he just took his first poop since they had him, and he’s a little bit bigger than my little one. I’m sure the pate food will help him process a bit quicker. We aren’t sure of when he ate or nursed last before we found them.
