Hi guys! So I have what we estimate to be a 4 week old kitten. We’ve had her since she was 2 weeks old. Today I offered her her first bowl of gruel (kitten meat mixed with her formula milk) and she absolutley loved it. She started eating straight away! However this is my first time weaning a kitten and I just wanted a little advice. I was wondering, should the meaty meal now be offered at every meal time or just once a day and the bottle the rest of the day? And when can the bottle be eliminated from the diet altogether? Finally, how many times a day must she be eating now once weaned?

    Thank you!

Hi Charlotte! Congrats on your new kitten! I’m going to post some links that will answer your questions for you, but I would offer her the gruel at each meal, if she doesn’t eat it all you can save it and refrigerate it, then warm it for the next meal. After she is full, and she plays for a while, you can offer her a bottle if you wish. She is old enough now to offer her a litter box too. One that is low to the ground that she can easily get in and out of. Put plain clay, unscented, NONCLUMPING litter in there for now as kittens tend to think of it as food and the clumping kind can cause a blockage. Take her paw after she has eaten when you would normally pee and poop her, and dig in the litter with it. If you have a poop of hers, put it in there. They automatically take to it and seem to know what to do. Keep us posted!!

Thank you so much for your reply! She’s now been on the gruel for 3 days and absolutley loves it! She refuses to take the bottle anymore and only wants meat haha! I’m Putting less formula mixed into the food with each meal until she’s eventually going to be just left with the kitten food straight out the tin. She also took to the litter box straight away! Again thank you so much for your help!!
