Hi TDK! I’m in some urgent need of help!

One of my tomcats brought home this tiny as hell kitten from somewhere and deposited it at my feet. At first I was shocked because I thought he had killed it already but then I saw that the kitten was moving.

It is breathing normally and I’ve been giving it Beaphar’s Puppy And Kitten Milk Substitute every 2-3 hours. It doesn’t drink much at one go. Like 10-15 drops max so that’s a bit worrying.

Peeing is fine. I stimulate it once before drinking milk and once after drinking milk. It pees both the times.

BUT IT IS NOT POOPING. WHAT DO I DO? I have tried all the rubbing methods. The pee is a very faint yellow so I think the baby is running a risk of dehydration too.

Can anyone suggest me something? Is it normal for newborns to not poop? It had not eaten much yesterday though. But it is eating slightly more today. Its eyes aren’t open yet. Doesn’t meow AT ALL unless I’m cleaning it. Seems to be sleeping all the time. Doesn’t crawl around either unless I’m feeding it. Basically it just sleeps if I’m not touching it.

The vet we have here isn’t that great but I’m still thinking of taking it to the vet tomorrow since he doesn’t sit at the clinic today.

    Please help.

Hello! When I found my cat he was approx. 3 days old or around there (still had the umbilical cord, eyes and ears closed). I had the same problem you’re having. He went almost a week without pooping! We found him on a Wednesday, and by Friday he hadn’t pooped. I was really worried so we took him to the vet and he said it was likely due to the change in diet with having to drink formula, and that formula can sometimes constipated kittens. He gave us a mineral supplement that we mixed in with his milk when we fed him and it still took days before he pooped. I was worried sick, but it all ended up okay! If I were you I would still go to the vet to make sure everything is okay. It’s scary to have a kitten so young! They depend on you so much. Kudos to you for taking on the responsibility. Good luck, and keep us updated!

Hi Alan, Elise is right. When switching from mother’s milk to formula, it sometimes constipated kittens. You can supplement with goat’s milk (found in the grocery in the baking aisle in cans: the canned is condensed so add water 1 to 1–or in the cold milk section of the grocery). Goat’s milk is non constipating for kittens and won’t cause diarrhea either. I’ve used it myself on my last kitten and he did very well and I didn’t have to deal with the constipation issue.
You were lucky that the Tomcat brought you a live kitten, as toms sometimes kill kittens as they see them as competition for the female’s attention and propagating their own line. It’s also why they fight with other toms.
I am going to post some links that may help with hand rearing this kitten. Good luck! Stop back and let us know how you are doing!
