Wow Kit I love that rendition. Some songs are just right for right music styles and I think that one is a perfect fit.

I love how TSO have used familiar Christmas carols and kept the magic in the music even when it’s given a rock makeover.

Whenever my family visits during Christmas, we play a suite of tobacco-themed songs. Here are some of our favorites:

Smoke Smoke Smoke That Cigarette (original Tex Williams version):

Chew Tobacco Rag (Pee Wee King version):

Also, in honor of our annual family meal together, we always play Pork & Beans on the piano (even though it’s been years since we’ve actually eaten pork and beans for dinner!):

My family loves our version of Christmas music way more than traditional Christmas music! Beat it, Bing Crosby LOL!

I like two parts of this clip:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWxgo6WhABg&list=PLBD7F147B0EB37790&index=1&feature=plpp_video

The relevant parts are from 1:00 min to 2:50 min, and from 3:00 min to 3:23 min, into the video. Before that is a mid-1960s commercial for flashcubes, and after that is a routine variety show production number.

I’ve been trying to convince Quinn to sing the first song, as written, during one of our Christmas services, but I haven’t succeeded yet.

    Lyrics to Light One Candle

    LIGHT ONE CANDLE

Peter Yarrow- ©1983 Silver Dawn Music ASCAP

Light one candle for the Maccabee children

With thanks that their light didn’t die

Light one candle for the pain they endured

When their right to exist was denied

Light one candle for the terrible sacrifice

    Justice and freedom demand

But light one candle for the wisdom to know

When the peacemaker’s time is at hand

    chorus:

Don’t let the light go out!

It’s lasted for so many years!

Don’t let the light go out!

Let it shine through our love and our tears.

Light one candle for the strength that we need

To never become our own foe

And light one candle for those who are suffering

Pain we learned so long ago

Light one candle for all we believe in

That anger not tear us apart

And light one candle to find us together

With peace as the song in our hearts

    (chorus)

What is the memory that’s valued so highly

That we keep it alive in that flame?

What’s the commitment to those who have died

That we cry out they’ve not died in vain?

We have come this far always believing

    That justice would somehow prevail

This is the burden, this is the promise

This is why we will not fail!

    (chorus)

Don’t let the light go out!

Don’t let the light go out!

Don’t let the light go out!

    Lyrics to Hayo Haya

Hayo, haya, melech rasha, melech rasha.

    Charbo chada, umlutasha, umlutasha

    Mihu? Antiochus, Antiochus.

Let us remember reign of terror, reign of terror

King who murdered pain forever, pain forever

    Who then? Antiochus, Antiochus

    Antiochus, Antiochus

The blood he spilled, Jerusalem, Jerusalem

So many killed, gone all of them, gone all of them

    Who then? Antiochus, Antiochus

Our hearts he broke, he burned the Torah, burned the Torah

Ash and smoke, the crushed menorah, crushed menorah

    Who then? Antiochus, Antiochus

Arise our hero, Judah save us, Judah save us

Prize so dear, the vict’ry gave us, freedom gave us

    Who then? Macabeus, Macabeus

Oh sing our songs and praise the Torah, praise the Torah

Right the wrongs and light menorah, light menorah

    When then? Chanukah, Chanukah

Does anyone know the Hanukkah song (more of a recitation, actually) by, I think, a comedian listing celebrities who are Jewish? There’s a reference in it to being able to “spin the dreidl with Captain Kirk and Mister Spock”.
