Emma Goldman, a crusader for women’s rights and social justice, is arrested in New York City for lecturing and distributing materials about birth control. She was accused of violating the Comstock Act of 1873, which made it a federal offense to disseminate contraceptive devices and information through the mail or across state lines. In addition to advocating for women’s reproductive rights, Goldman, who was later convicted and spent time in jail, was a champion of numerous controversial causes and ideas, including anarchism, free speech and atheism. Nicknamed “Red Emma,” the forward-thinking Goldman was arrested multiple times for her activist activities.

I know about the February Strike in Amsterdam and Rotterdam from periods working in the Netherlands (not permanently – a stint at a research institute there). This was certainly the first general strike against the Nazi occupation anywhere in Europe, in 1941, and similar events in Italy (which I know more about) happened a couple of years later: http://www.dutchnews.nl/features/2016/02/ten-things-about-the-february-strike/ 25 February 1941.

I remember commemorations at the turn of this century when there were still survivors/veterans of the general strike present, but alas most will probably have died of natural causes by now or be too frail to participate.

On a happier note, the Ottawa Tulip festival (in a few months) commemorates the gratitude of the Dutch to the Canadians…

Never forgotten – the lovely George Harrison. In 1963, when I threw my autograph book on to the stage, it was George who picked it up and looked around for the owner. And my brother, with whom I had gone to the concert, wouldn’t let me stay to retrieve it!

    Happy Birthday, George.

CWS, I’m sure that your brother is wonderful, especially to take you to rock concert, but grrr (mildly) for not letting you retrieve your autograph book. I like to think (on your behalf) the “the quiet Beatle” kept it!
