Born on April 26, 1900, American seismologist Charles F. Richter invented the Richter Scale in 1935. This measures the amount of energy released by an earthquake by measuring the magnitude or seismic waves produced, from 0 to 9.

I didn’t make it to the Penguin Cafe as the site wasn’t working when I went to post.
JJ, well done you and the furry purry three on the vet visit and woohoo for discount WWednesday and block booking. Well done Leela for not being such a wild cat.
KJ, sorry about your stomach wobbles returning. The apartment situation can’t be helping at all.
KZ, how is Willow doing? Does he have his appetite back yet?
    Waving to JK and PG.
Earthquakes ! ! Something I know about first hand.
The Red Zone was areas where the land was so badly damaged by the two Christchurch quakes(4/9/2010 7.1 & 22/2/2011 6.2) that the areas were totally evacuated of people and all properties condemned. They have remained uninhabited since. Many lost frightened pets were still living there until they were rescued and in all likelihood there are still some there.

Good morning – I remember those earthquakes, MS. So much destruction. The last notable one around here was in 2011.
Comet and Mac will go back to the vet in 2 weeks. Comet got an antibiotic injection because the vet found pus in his ear. Mac has something going on with his ear too. I get to clean and medicate their ears, good times! Comet came up this morning to say he feels good…and that he wants a drink of water from the sink!

Mild tremors were very common in Perugia when I was studying there, but some years after there was far more damage, especially to the historic churches and frescos in nearby Assisi. Some of the famous Giotto frescos I’d seen in the cathedral were utterly destroyed. At least that part of Italy is well organised and not as infested by corruption as some, so there was not the considerable loss in life and poor rescue organisation as in some other regions.

Thanks for asking MS…Willow was sick for a full 24 hours and couldn’t keep anything down. I was getting ready for a vet visit when he came out of it and actually ate something and kept it down. He acted just like a person when they have the stomach virus, he slept a lot and just acted miserable. I have no idea what the problem was, unless he ate something that didn’t agree with him…meaning a plant or something. I don’t know what plant that would be because they are hanging and he can’t reach anything, plus they aren’t poisonous or anything. He could have picked up a virus I guess, but don’t know how unless there was something on our shoes? It was so unusual, because he NEVER gets sick when the girls are always yakking! Peso doesn’t get sick either.

I’m glad I don’t have to deal with earthquakes, and hope I never do. I remember one when I was a teenager..my mom’s refrigerator sort of ‘walked’ across the floor! 😳

JJ, sorry you have sick kitties!! Hope the antibiotics work for them.

Hope that the kits who are under the weather are over the weather soon! 😉

I always thought that during a earthquake one was supposed to take shelter in a bathtub. Or a doorframe. I’ve no idea why. And hope never to find out! 😮

I’m guessing that MS knows the most about earthquake safety. I live near a fault line which is quite active but its action is mostly harmless tremors that aren’t felt.
If you’re in a building, either get outside or stand in a doorway.
I think the bathtub thing is for tornadoes.
Comet and Mac say thanks for the well wishes. They don’t know they’re sick, because I’ve been too chicken to start with the cleaning and medicating their ears. Last time I had to do it was for an indoor/outdoor kitty, didn’t have to clean a room when I put drops in their ears outside!

    DURING AN EARTHQUAKE
If you are inside a building, move no more than a few steps, drop, cover and hold. Stay indoors till the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit. In most buildings in New Zealand you are safer if you stay where you are until the shaking stops.
If you are in an elevator, drop, cover and hold. When the shaking stops, try and get out at the nearest floor if you can safely do so.
If you are outdoors when the shaking starts, move no more than a few steps away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines, then Drop, Cover and Hold.
If you are at the beach or near the coast, drop, cover and hold then move to higher ground immediately in case a tsunami follows the quake.
If you are driving, pull over to a clear location, stop and stay there with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops. Once the shaking stops, proceed with caution and avoid bridges or ramps that might have been damaged.
If you are in a mountainous area or near unstable slopes or cliffs, be alert for falling debris or landslides.
Good afternoon, JJ fun times cleaning cats ears. You do live an exciting life. I hope Mac and Comet’s ears are all cleared up and healthy soon.
KZ, I was wondering because your description of him vomiting up brownish liquid and then not eating is exactly what my brothers cat has done recently. I haven’t heard how she is doing.
Earthquakes, you never get used to them but you learn to sense if it’s going to be short or small or continue on and be a rough ride and to take the appropriate action quickly. I guess it’s lie people who live in tornado alley, you learn to expect the unexpected because you have no other option. Oh yes, furniture walking across the room.
KJ, door frames used to be the place to shelter but now they recommend a heavy piece of furniture like a solid table, get under and grasp a leg to stop it from walking away from you. Bath tubs are for tornadoes I believe.
The idea is to also stay inside rather than run outside in case of falling building parts/windows or trees/utility poles and lines falling on you.
We had a sunny morning then it clouded over but I see the sun has returned. We have a wet weekend ahead of us and that weather is just arriving at the top of the country. I must get out into the garden and lay straw between all my plants to keep weeds down and warmth and moisture in over the Winter.

Still hope to never have to put these earthquake practices into practice!

Thanks for the quake info, MS!

    I concur, KJ.

Colorado has been experiencing more tremors and I believe it’s related to fracking. The fracking has been growing exponentially. Of course, if you ask the oil industry “it’s not our fault, fracking is safe.” *Steps off soap box*

I’m glad Willow is better. Sometimes, we just don’t know.

Steps onto soap box – too many coincidences for fracking to be considered safe. Polluted water, increased quake activity at the forefront.
    Steps off soap box.
Oh I forgot to mention that for those in coastal areas after a quake there is a possibility of tsunami.
