    Hello, all!

Sweetling is doing wonderfully well and now weighs 400 grams. She’s still got a lot of catching up to do, but she fully recovered from her illness and is now a purrrfectly healthy kitty, albeit needing the occasional laxative to aid with pooping.

    However…

Sweetling’s mother brought her two surviving siblings back yesterday. They’re now on an inaccessible part of our roof, safe and away from the rain and with her, and they’re in an awful state. One of the kittens was down on the ground while she struggled to bring it up (she managed eventually) and while it was, she allowed us to pet and examine him. He’s nothing but skin and bone, but very sweet. Even though he’d never had human contact, he warmed right up to me and let me stroke him after a few minutes (with momma occasionally wanting a petting, too). Both of his eyes are infected, he can’t see out of the right one at all. We managed to give him the eye drops we’d given to Sweetling, and they helped a lot, but I think it’s too late for the right one.

When they’re older and able to come down, we’re going to give them dewormer and hopefully get the whole family vaccinated. If we can, we’re going to adopt Sweetling’s one-eyed brother as well, providing he survives long enough to allow us to grab him, our dachsund doesn’t mind another family member, and our financial situation allows for another squeaker.

    I’ve named him Tompkin. ๐Ÿ˜†

What a sweet name! You can purchase a humane box trap and put wet food inside. When the cat/kittens go in, it slams shut and they can’t get out, but it doesn’t hurt the cat. This way they can be treated or taken to the vet for inspection.

You made my heart happy when you said you were going to take care of them and adopt Tompkin! Cats have such a hard time staying healthy under the best of circumstances outside.

Thank you! He looks like a Tompkin. It was the first and only name that came to mind when I saw him.

Unfortunately, the roof structure makes it so that we can’t even physically reach near where they are, and there’s no room for a trap. Otherwise, I think it would be ideal! Tompkin didn’t like being picked up, but he didn’t freak out and start clawing and biting everything in sight either, so I have high hopes of simply being able to plop him in a carrier once he comes down from the roof.

We always do our best for the dears whenever they come to our door – it’s a pleasure to do so! I’m unsure of what the future holds, as our current financial situation is quite tight and certain family members are against the idea of adopting another kitten.

I wish there was a way to convince them that no, you can’t inhale cat hair and get lung cancer, and cat fur in the eye doesn’t get stuck and need to be operated on to be removed. This person means well, but they’re making it quite difficult to even care for Sweetling sometimes. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ If not adopt Tompkin, I hope to at least give him food, water and shelter whenever he needs it, and of course, the vaccinations and dewormer.

I surgically remove cat hair from my eyes and eyelashes (via fingernail inserted in lower lid) at least daily ๐Ÿ˜† and probably more often than that! It hasn’t caused any loss of sight, and only slight irritation when said hair requires a mirror and tweezers for more delicate removal.

I would still remain firm, afterall, being a rescuer really isn’t a choice, it’s how you were born and what you are called to do. The rest of the world (and household) can take a flying leap IMHO, and yes, I have had opposition too, but HE (who shall remain nameless) finally decided that it wasn’t worth the hassle and has been very helpful with the raising of our latest kitten. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hahaha, that sounds like quite an intensive surgery, Kittyzee! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I wish I could press the issue further, but any attempt to do so ends in an argument. They are completely convinced that it’s somehow different for cats in our country, and any attempt to reason brings up the ‘better safe than sorry’ route. The old lady next door who dislikes cats and dogs, the person who likely put those ideas in her head in the first place, is not helping.

Thank you for those links, PG!
