I am very impressed with the submitted books! I think this will keep the reading very interesting. We have a variety of books above that I personally think will make for great reading. Just remember if you don’t like the book that is ok. Just think how boring the world would be if everyone liked the same things.

Wow – I have been wanting to read the Brief History of the Dead but got voted down by my club here so I’m excited about that!

I am a little mixed up. If a list of books is posted for the coming months what are we voting on? Or are we? Sorry but I am confused.

Pet, I think WWM was voted down at her home book club, not TDK. I want to encourage everyone NOT to read any reviews of The Brief History of the Dead, since many reviews give away the entire premise. Just go in blind! Trust me.

Petpntr…I think at one time we talked about voting but then decided that it might work better this way. This is copied and pasted from the other thread.

How bout this? I pick the first one and then everyone submit a book they would like to read and email it to me. The order that I recieve the email is the order the books are put on the list. We will publish the list on the March 1 and then we will have several months planned in advance! I promise I will be honest and compile the list as the submissions come in. As books are submitted we just add to the list!

Except I went ahead and published the list so people will have time to order books ahead of time if they need to. I went ahead with Dewey because so many liked the idea of it being the first book to read and being a cat book!!!!

I know it can get confusing if you see the part about voting and then not see the above post!

Maybe, after we see how this goes we could submit more books, vote on them, take August off and go from there…

I got Dewey last night hoping it would get picked…

Oh, yes – I’m so sorry if I caused confusion! I so wanted to read A Brief History of the Dead and brought it to my local book group when we met in September to decide our books for the year. But I was voted down 🙁 So I am so glad that we will be reading it here! And if it’s wonderful, you can bet that I’ll be bringing it before my local group again!

I’d like to nominate The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith for the August selection. Smith has written nine books in this series and the tenth is to be released on April 21, 2009. I’ve read them all and love them. HBO has created a mini-series based upon these books. I can’t wait to watch it.

Would you be suggesting one book or several from the series? I only ask because, having read a few of them, they are each pretty fast reads. Not that that’s a problem, might even be a help with everyone being so busy :).

I’d like to suggest Neverwhere (Neil Gaiman) or Good Omens (Gaiman and Pratchett), becuase I love them both so much. But I will say that Good Omens might be taken as being a bit disrespectful to religion, although I personally didn’t find it to be.

I think the first book in the series would be reasonable. If folks get hooked like me, they can read as many more as they want to. I’m so amazed at Mr. Smith’s ability to capture the female perspective of the women in his books. The “voice” rings true for me. 🙂

ILMC, I have a question about the April book “Serpeant’s Tail”. Is that a book in a series? If so, what is the book before it? I ordered a set of books from Amazon, it was included in a set of three books by the author. If this is the case you may want to let the other’s know that this is in a set and they need to read the other book first. Just getting a clarification. Thanks a gazillion! Thanks for helping “pick” books. They are all outstanding choices! I have one to submit, do I do that to you and do I email it or submit it here?

MC I made the suggestion. Her first book has nothing to do with The Mistress of the Art of Death which is the first book that introduces the characters in The Serpent’s Tale. The Serpent’s Tale does not have to be read after The Mistress of the Art of Death. Ariana Franklin wrote the books to stand on their own. You can read the others if you chose, but it is not necessary. It is similar to reading Agatha Christie. You do not have to read them in order, each case stands on its own.

Again Ariana Franklin has created a set of characters used in other stories, but you DO NOT have to read The Mistrss of the Art of Death. Also if you like the book she has another coming later this year Grave Goods!

    Happy Reading!
