We had/have a cat problem at my work and had an organization come out to help trap, fix, & release. We caught this cutie pie the other day. They took him, cleaned him up and tested him. Turns out he has FIV. A friend from work is taking him I think. He’s fixed and declawed. He is a love bug. Anybody have any tips on how to keep a cat with FIV healthy a long time?

The best quality food you can afford is the best way of laying a good foundation for health. The minute the kitty looks like he’s even just considering feeling sick, take him to the vet. FIV cats do get better when they’re sick, but it takes them much longer to get better. The usual duration of a course of antibiotics for a FIV cat is 4 weeks, compared to the usual 4-7 days for non-FIV cats. There are 2 big problems with FIV cats in general: they are extremely prone to periodontal disease, so dental cleaning appointments once a year are a good idea. The other issue they have is skin cancers – many different types of skin cancer. So always watch out for funny lumps & bumps. Other than that, running a full blood panel on them twice a year is a good idea, just to keep an eye on the functioning of all their organs etc.

I imagined that would be important. A good diet is good for everyone. I also did read elsewhere about taking the cat to the vet every six months. I passed this information along to her. Thank you very much.

He’s in my office for the remainder of the day. he’s such a cutie-patootie.
