I read this story online a bit ago and it really touched me.
Two dogs, a four month old female and a one-year-old female, were abandoned in a third-story apartment in New Bedford, Mass for over a month. They were living in their own filth in the roach and flea-infested apartment. The older dog risked death by jumping out of a third-story window in search of food. She broke her hip and hind leg and required immediate surgery to survive and is now recovering. She has been named Miracle. Very appropriate. The puppy, reportedly in shock when first discovered, is now eating but still requires hospitalization. She has been named Gracie.

The Animal Rescue League of Boston is asking for the public’s help to offset the costs associated with the dogs’ care and rehabilitation. Maybe this story touched me so much because I just threw away about five dollars worth of fuzzy food from the back of my fridge this morning. Or maybe it was because I was sitting in my comfortable apartment and eating a tuna sandwich and a banana and had a full belly and read about an animal that was so starved that it took a leap of faith by jumping out of a three-story window in search of food, while so many of us are surrounded by food and do not have to worry about going hungry. In fact, for some of us, the goal is to not eat so much. In any event, I felt that the least I could do was offer 5 dollars to help. It’s not much, of course, but if I can literally throw away five dollars worth of food gone bad, I can certainly GIVE five dollars to help an animal who needs help. And if you read Today in History today, you will see that today, Oct 5, is Do Something Nice Day. I think this qualifies, eh?

I just spoke with Gavin Gourley with the Animal Rescue League in Boston, who writes for their blog. He was very kind and accommodating, especially when I starting crying on the phone. (Sorry about that, Gavin.) I invited him to visit our blog and told him that I bet TDK’ers would want to assist these dogs. He is loving that he is getting phone calls from across the country from people who would like to help Miracle and Gracie. If you call the above number to offer a donation, you will probably speak with Gavin. Let him know that you are a proud TDKer!

You may be thinking that there are millions of animals out there who need our help. Very true. But one of my favorite sayings, by Mother Teresa, is:
If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.
