I have had these 4 kittens since the day they were born. The mother cat had them in my sisters garage and we had to move them (she has dogs that do not abide cats). Once moved the mother cat didn’t want anything to do with them. Anyway, they are 4 weeks old now and have been doing fine until today (taking the bottle with no problems). This morning they were wobbling around and meowing, but by noon the runt (Chuck Norris) had died! 2 of his siblings were a bit lethargic too, but now they seem a little better. I live in a very rural area, and there isn’t a vet for miles and miles. I just don’t know what went wrong!!! Any ideas???

Have they gotten too cold, or hot? Are they dehydrated? Was the formula too cold or too old? Could they have eaten something they shouldn’t have? Can you call a vet even if you can’t get them in? Is there any possibility that you could find someone else who has kittens and a mama cat? If so, the kittens could be put with the mama and many times she will adopt them.

I’m so sorry. It’s very very hard to bring up kittens without their mums and we still don’t know why they are so fragile, the mortality rate is very high. I have no idea what happened — could the runt’s blood sugar levels have crashed or had he eaten recently? — but these websites are invaluable for bringing up orphans, especially the messybeast site, and also if you click on the pink tag ‘orphans’, top right hand corner, you’ll find many previous threads on this subject, full of advice and foster parents’ experiences. Good luck with the other little ones.

Thank you so much for all the advice. I made up some of the pedialyte and it really seemed to perk them up. I think maybe they were a little dehydrated. Hopefully this will do the trick, and they won’t relapse into that weird lethargic state they were in this morning. The weird thing was that the one little one died, and then two were lethargic, but then the tabby was fine. He didn’t show any symptoms, and they all eat the same thing and the same amount. Anyway, I’ll keep hydrating them with the mixture and hopefully they will grow into nice healthy cats 🙂
