Hi guys!! I have never owned a cat because my mom and sister are severely allergic so I have zero knowledge of what to do. This site has been helping me so far so I figured I’d post my predicament here and try to get your advice.
I just got home (southeast Texas) for the summer only to find that my parents had a kitten!! Big shocker as my moms really allergic to cats. Turns out they were going for a walk and this beautiful blue kitten started trotting after them. Since she approached them they picked her up, brought her home, and gave her a cardboard box with towels. This was just over a week ago.
The kitten looks like she’s about 5 weeks old. She’s incredibly sweet and happy, but I know she needs to go to the vet for her first check up. But we really cannot afford to go to the vet.
Naturally, I took to the internet to figure out what to do. The consensus seemed to be to ask around at animal shelters (like humane society) to see what they could do. The nearest shelter had no room and just gave us some online resources (which I had already found…). We’ve been giving the kitten wet kitten food and replacement milk but we really can’t afford to take care of her, alongside the fact that we have no idea how to care for kittens that small. We’ve let her stay in our garage but we can’t do it for much longer. How do you care for kittens in need like this, with such limited resources?

I think you are doing pretty good so far, but a kitten that small, with no mom to watch over it, should really be inside. Its very dangerous outside for kittens, there are so many possible dangers out there. If bringing it is not an option for you, and you’re not able to keep it in the garage much longer, maybe whats best for the kitten, is a family who can. if your mother is too allergic, that may be the best thing you can do for it. Try posting ads online, and you might be able to find someone who can take the kitten.

    Kelly,

Thanks for trying to care for the kitten. The kitten is still young enough that she needs a foster home. City/county shelters don’t have the people or space to foster kittens. So if you take her to a city/county shelter, they will euthanize her. Contact a no kill shelter and explain the situation.

    Thanks again

Yeah, we’ve been trying to find someone to take her but it’s been a week with no luck. I live in a pretty rural place so the only no kill shelter would be the humane society, and they couldn’t take her. Is there any site that’s best to post ads on? We tried southeasttexas.com (local market place), local craigslist, and facebook.

What makes me worry so much, and what made me post on here, is that I saw so many other people posting about kittens about the same age, in the same situation, and nobody was taking them. I really want to give her to someone who can keep her safe, but what happens if I can’t?

For the moment we’ll try to find places to post her. She sounds utterly lovely (I love blue-grey cats as much as I do black ones) but I live far, far away!

Do you also have kijiji there? Often it is a good idea to ask potential adopters for a small payment, just to ensure they aren’t selling the kitten to research labs or other horrid destinations.

It would not hurt to contact the Texas vet/rescue site vetranch.org Yes, I know that Texas is a very big state, but they might at least have some ideas. From what you say in your post (not your writing, which is very mature) I get the idea that you are a very young person, perhaps a teenager? Dr Matt and the other vets and technicians at Vet Ranch could well be interested in your story. There slogan is “We’re gonna save them all!” – don’t know whether that is always possible, but give it a try. I hope you have a good photo of her. She sounds adorable, and that will give her a good chance. Good luck, and thanks for your love and concern for this wee girl.

You could also try Alley Cat Allies and tell them your situation. Go to this site and there is a ‘get help’ tab.

    Hi Kelly,

I Googled “southeast texas and no-kill shelters” and got a pretty extensive list. There may be more but this is a start:

You might also want to try contacting local vets to see if at the very least they’ll put up a photo and some contact info. That’s how I adopted my first kitty. Someone knew that I wanted to adopt, happened to see pic and the rest is history!

Hope that something works out. KJ

Thanks for all of the help guys! I just got home from church and found that my sister gave her to some friends who will be able to take care of her. I’m so happy that she’s safe!

Wonderful! That means that you’ll be able to see her and cuddle her, and take care of her whenever they are travelling.
