We rescued a 3-weekish old kitten a few weeks ago that was pretty sick. She had a bad URI and was so emaciated and weak she barely moved.

She’s been on two rounds of antibiotics for the URI, was given praziquantel for tapeworms and another wormer I can’t recall the name of, and is now doing very well – healthy, playful, bright eyed and growing every day.

She was bottle fed the first week or so, and we stimulated her for pee and poop. She started to pee on her own very quickly, and now goes to the litter box every time she needs to.

HOWEVER. She will not poop on her own. At first we thought it was because she was so sick, or maybe dehydrated, or perhaps constipation from all the medicine, but now we’re just not sure. She is definitely at the age she should be going on her on, but we’re having a hard time weaning her on this one specific thing.

Has anyone else dealt with this or have any advice/expertise?

Thank you for rescuing and saving your wee girl. Many meds. cause constipation. Does she poop when you stimulate her? If so, you can put a bit of olive or mineral oil in her formula which works as a lubricant. Kits can go a couple of days without a poop.

Unless her behavior changes dramatically in the next 24 hours, I would wait to call the vet. However, always go with your instincts.

I would do what PG has suggested in putting some lubricant in her food. If she is eating solid food, such as wet food, she should be going on her own. Since she has had dewormers, I am concerned that she might have had a large worm burden and cannot pass it without some help. If she doesn’t poop, a call to the vet or a visit might be in order to make sure there’s nothing there preventing her from pooping. Once you get the all clear, you can relax and enjoy raising your kitten.

If she is pooping when you stimulate her, then the problem could be she just doesn’t understand the litterbox/poop connection. If you get poops from her when stimulated, put the poop in the litterbox and the next time she goes, she will smell it in there and make the connection. Hope this helps and keep us posted!
