I just adopted a 3mo kitten (Mao) from a local humane society on Saturday. She was fine until Tuesday afternoon when she started sneezing and her right eye was watery. I took her to the vet Wed for her first check up and the vet said it was common for new kittens to get sick and it should clear up on its own. She gave me some eye drops (Tobramyacin) to give twice daily. Thursday, Mao sneezed a lot, but she acted ok, ate lots of food, had multiple bowel movements, etc. Today, she seems sluggish, won’t eat, she isn’t sneezing as much, but does this thing where it looks like she has hiccups, or her breath is caught in her throat. I am worried sick, and am considering taking her back to the vet tomorrow morning, but I don’t want to seem like i’m over reacting. Has anyone experienced anything like this before? Thank you so much for the advice!!

Try giving her room temperature wetfood and make sure she is drinking water. She should go back to a vet and given some antibiotics. She may not be able to smell which is why she has trouble eating. If your kitty is sick it isn’t overreacting. Sometimes humane societies have shelter insurance for animals they adopt out because they can get sick from transitioning. I hope she gets better!

IT’s probably a URI aka a kitty cold. I would take her to the vet asap, so it doesn’t get worse. Steam bathes may also help. I would estimate that 50% or more of kittens from shelters have one.

Yep, URI sounds about right. The vet would probably be your best option. Although I have to say, your vet was wrong. Kitties who come from shelters have had a hard start in life and in my experience NEVER kick a URI’s butt on their own – always need antibiotics. I’m beginning to think its what vet’s do to make money these days – low ball a diagnosis and be sure to have clients coming back in a few days for a follow-up . . . (just my fed-up opinion though – not saying all of them are like that)
