Hello to everyone. I live in Oregon City, OR in an apartment complex where cats and kittens are dumped or left behind by previous tenants. How they can leave their “children” left by unattended for is beyond me but unfortunately some people don’t care.

Thomas (as I call him) is a very sweet and gentle young cat (maybe nine months old). At times he is very shy but even if I have to go after him, I am trying to keep him socialized so he doesn’t turn feral.

I have called the Oregon Humane Society and all the other shelters. With all of spring and summer’s new kittens, these places are filled up. I have a tentative placement with the OHS but not for three to five months.

I can only have two inside kitties and have already adopted a neutered calico whose owners still live here but don’t care or feed her. I have a very limited income and am a disabled veteran. Next month or so it will be rainy and I hate to see him outside without a home. If there is anybody in this area who’d like to adopt him or foster him, who can offer him at least somewhat of a inside home please let me know. He’ll make somebody a wonderful pet.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and have a good day!

    Blessings,

    =^..^=

I wish I could help! I will say a prayer for Thomas to find a home. You could also try listing him on petfinder. As far as shelter for upcoming bad weather, is it possible for you to construct a small shelter for him and some other area ferals? They could be placed in out of the way places, the kitties will use them when they need them. Here is a website that can give you tips and plans on constructing shelters as well as a lot of great info on helping ferals.

Hi Katzenmother…I know what it’s like to have limited resources and space for kittens but to still have to witness the poor darlings out there in the cold, cruel world. I’m in S. Oregon and have adopted four ferals myself and like you, have a neighbor cat who’s not been taken care of. The cat would love it if I’d just completely take her for my own as her owner takes no time to love and care for her. It breaks my heart because I’m on a fixed income and can’t really afford the extra mouth to feed. Still I manage to put something out for her. Outdoor ferals can be quite resourceful where the winter months are concerned. If you didn’t bring him indoors could you actually setup a simple small, cozy box for him to snuggle in on your door stoop? My heart aches for him and all the others that are out there without a home or people to care for them. Best of Luck dear, I wish I could take him but my hands are full. God Bless you for caring…he’s already luckier than most just having you on his side.

I read on one site how you can make a shelter from a large styrofoam container–it’s waterproof and wind-resistant. I used to use them for my ferals in my former backyard. I wish I could remember the web site—anyone else remember?

Thank you all for the ideas that I will explore. I have already purchased a 18 qt. plastic storage container with a lid that was on sale for 3.99 at KMart. I have gotten this for the calico I have fully adopted (my other half let me keep her as part of my b-day). This is the one that is supposedly owned by another tenant. I plan on cutting a hole on the front side of this and will put her bedding inside. If she takes to this, I have already planned on making a padded insulation I will velcro inside for this winter. I may try and see if Thomas would like this too. I never thought of a styrofoam container as it would already be insulated. What’s nice about the storage container is that it is gray, the color of the apt. complex and should blend in where I’m not told it is unsightly.

Karenopa, I’d love a web friend to email to if you’d like. My email is birchtree@ymail.com. You don’t need another mouth to feed though I dearly appreciate your kind thoughts. To Sheba’s Mom in Phx; I just moved away from the Kingman, AZ area in February and lived in Apache Jct. in the early 90’s. Again, I thank you all for the kind support and ideas. Love you all and blessings!

Beth, your black kitty pic looks almost identical to our Panther who is an 18 lb. nine year old love bug. Thank you for the post. We are going to have to make do until the Oregon Humane Society can take him. They are a “no kill’ shelter or otherwise I wouldn’t consider taking Thomas there. Thank you all for the positive thoughts and help!

The second link I listed above has many types of shelters to construct including with the plastic crates or styrofoam.. They will give you all the info and the pros and cons of each design.

2BPurring, thank you again for the websites. I now have some good ideas on how to reinforce my babies shelters. It is a great thing we have this place to get together to support each other. I am hoping my other half will just let me keep Thomas as I feel a special click with him. He doesn’t want more than two cats inside yet Thomas is so laid back he wouldn’t cause any problems. Have prayed about this for further guidance. Anyway, now I know how to better insulate. Thank you and bless you!

Katzenmother, I can totally relate to your bond with Thomas, I just added a new kitty to my family of two other kitties and a husband. She is about 5 mos old, I named her Lissa. She came to me when I was out walking in the neighborhood, she was so friendly I thought she must be someone’s pet, she can’t be a feral. Nobody responded to my signs so she is now with me since almost a month ago. I love her a lot, she is a small grey tabby but it looks like she has some abyssinian in her. Blessings to you for taking care of Thomas, I suspect your “other half” will come around, my hubby has really warmed up to Lissa.

Annie R, thank you so much for taking Lissa in as you did. If only everyone had your heart. I swear if I ever won the lottery (I suppose I should buy lottery tickets then but don’t), I would love to buy a big house where stray cats could like until they could be adopted by a responsible person. That way I could make sure that everything is up to standard for the kitties. Loving volunteers could help clean and socialize though I’m sure I’d be there doing the same anyway. This has been a dream of mine as I love kitties more than anything except for my other half. Please send a picture and your story with Lissa to TDK as I’d love to see her picture. If you are a member of Catster? If so let me know and I’ll get to see your babies. Many, many happy years with Lissa. I suspect you are right that my hubby will come around. I think he is afraid I’ll want to have a dozen cats living with us but that isn’t the case. To you and all my TDK family, have a great Labor Day weekend!
