I have of course witnessed this question and similar here before, and I apologize. But I have yet to find the answers I need for my specific situation and hoped it would be best to create an account and ask myself.

My husband and I live on a farm with many animals, cats included. One of our females apparently had kittens recently, but we only discovered one survivor in our barn. She had abandoned him in a bag of cat food, leaving us to assume she was trying to teach him to eat on his own. We aren’t exactly sure his age. She was completely done with him, obviously. But he is still very small. My husband brought him back to the house and we took responsibility for his care.
I would assume he is four weeks at least, give or take. He has all his teeth, his ears are fully open, and he is a very adventurous and happy little guy. After one night of spoon feeding soft kitten food (smashed up with warm water), he took to the kitten food on his own and eats like a little piggy. No problems there what so ever.

He still won’t drink water by himself. But I have had no issue giving him water by spoon at every meal. He just seems uninterested in it, but he drinks it from the spoon just fine.
He has been in our home for about 3 days now, and has gone wee just fine about 3 times. But still no poop!

He is s very vocal kitten, but does not seem to be in any pain. He is mostly just bratty, crying when he wants out of his box or to be held. He loves to snuggle, and has recently discovered the joys of string. He sleeps plenty. His belly isn’t hard and doesn’t seem bloated. He doesn’t seem dehydrated or sickly in any way. Actually, he seems completely healthy.

He runs around, climbs, plays, cuddles, purrs. He is honestly one of the sweetest and smartest little kittens ever. We have taken to calling him “Jelly Bean”.

I’ve tried the warm rag/cotton ball to stimulate him with no luck. I tried a warm Q tip slightly in the bum. All it did was make him mad lol.
I’ve begun to worry, even though he seems healthy and happy.

I feed him a little bit of the mushy kitten food about three times a day, sometimes four if he seems focal from hunger. I give him about 4 or 5 small table spoons of water after each meal. I snuggle him and play with him constantly, and always make sure he gets plenty of sleep.

Am I doing anything wrong? When should I worry or take him to the vet? (Of course I’m taking him to see a vet for a check up anyway. But I am also currently in labor, five days away from my due date, and don’t plan to take him unless I need to until after my son is born.)

Any advice will be greatly appreciated, and thank you all so much.

Also, something I forgot to mention…
I witnessed tonight that Jelly Bean is perfectly capable (and just learned how, I think) of licking his own privates. I’ve witnessed him grooming himself many times. He licks his own paws, cleans his own face, and licks his bum and private areas. Does this mean he could possibly stimulate himself if a constipation problem were to take place?

Am I possibly overly worried for nothing?

Oh my, Jelly Bean is adorable! Yes, I think you are worrying needlessly, but my concern is that he just doesn’t know what the litter box is for. He also may not like the scent of the litter if it is scented. The best to use for all kittens starting out is the cheap plain clay, unscented non-clumping litter. Once he gets the hang of it and that you don’t eat litter because it’s not food, then you can switch to clumping. You may want to investigate to see if he has been pooping somewhere else (on your laundry, under the bed, etc.) because he might be. Then clean it to remove all scent of poop, and put the poops in the litter box. Take his paw and scratch in the litter and give him an idea what it’s for. Make sure also that the box isn’t in a high traffic area where he gets disturbed when he is using it. It also needs to be low enough that he can get in and out of it with no problems.

I would get some goat’s milk (the powdered is easiest to mix) mix it with warm water, and offer it to him and see if he likes it. You can also mix a little in with his food, which will help him with hydration and it’s full of probiotics which helps his gut and immune system. You need to provide water for him, but cats don’t drink water like dogs–they get most of what they need from the food they eat. This is not true for dry food however, and wet food is best for cats.

Congratulations on your new kitten, and the new baby only days away!! Keep us posted on your kitten and you!

Thank you so much for the awesome advice!
    Update: we have poop!!!
He pooped twice the day after I made this post, actually. And has been pooping regularly since. We knew he hadn’t been pooping at all, because he never left my sight the entire time we’ve had him home. Plus, being so close to having a baby I am nesting to the extreme and if my house isn’t remaining absolutely spotless at all times, my husband worries about me burning it down.
We don’t keep indoor animals, and once he is big enough to go outside on the farm with the others, he will officially be an outside cat. So instead of a litter box, we have him pooping in a tiny box of dirt and grass that we clean out daily. He has taken to it rather nicely and is eating and drinking on his own, now. So I was letting myself get all worried for nothing, I guess lol!

Back in April, before we moved to our farm, I lost my little boy cat “Cthulhu” to illness and have been extremely paranoid when it comes to my animals ever since. So I get rather panicked easily.

So little Jelly Bean is doing wonderfully and I am currently on the brink of two centimeters dilated! 🙂 Lots going on, new kitten getting accustomed to his new home and a newborn baby boy on the way! 😀
