I found a kitten that was abandoned by its mother. It can’t be more than a couple hours old. It still had it’s umbilical cord and afterbirth attached, so I cut it off about an inch from the belly.

I have a bottle and formula (specifically made for kittens) and have been feeding it. I’m not sure if it’s actually getting any formula inside it because after I feed it for a little bit in tries to nurse off the blanket in the bottom of the box I’m keeping it in.

The kitten is very dirty (it has dirt and, what I assume is, stuff from birth still on it) and I don’t know what to do to clean it. I also don’t know how often I need to wipe its genital area in order to have it urinate/deficate. Any information or links to articles would be very helpful!!

(also I don’t know if this is the right place to post this because it’s my first time on this site and it’s a little confusing to navigate)

You can wipe the kitten with a warm damp cloth and use a blow dryer on low to dry it. Some people actually give the kitten a bath, and if it’s that dirty you can. Just make sure that you don’t get water in it’s ears and rinse well and blow dry. Make sure it’s completely dry or it will be cold and could die.

The umbilical cord will fall off on it’s own in a few days. If it is smelly, you can dab some alcohol on it to dry it up. I’ll post some links for you on hand raising kittens. I have found them to be extremely helpful with my kittens.
