A couple days ago we discovered a litter of kittens in my pool cover. The mother is an outside cat that belongs to a family a couple houses down the road. They do not care to spay/neuter any of their cats so they keep reproducing. The mother took a few of the kittens but left three. She has not come back for them in a few days. They looked lethargic and neglected so i made them a house and put them in my barn. I know ur not supposed to touch them but the mother wasnt caring for them. They look about 2 to 3 weeks old. They dont like to suck on the bottle and they only pee once in a while when i stimulate them. They havent pooped since i took them. They also have fleas. Im only 17 and my parents wont let them in the house and wont take them to the vet because tech. they are not our pets, their strays and we cant afford to take them in. I already have many animals. I know they should be taken to the vet but i alone cant afford it. We’ve called local animal shelters and spca they are all full and wont take them. I dont know what to do, im trying to care for them the best i can. Any advise?

Welcome to TDK Leena. It’s real slow here on the weekends & you might not have to many responding because of it. Maybe if you continue to call the local shelters & tell them if they don’t take the kittens, they will most likely die from the elements of the weather & most likely, starvation if the mother has not returned to them.

I know it took some persistance on my part when I was in rescue for many yrs.to find people whowould give mine a second chance at life. Most of the cats I have now (8 inside-3 outside) are ones that became adult when I could find no permanant homes for them. Many people prefer kittens over adult cats when getting a new kitty. Is there any chance your folks would change their mind & at least let you care for them until a shelter has room for them? And are you sure the mother left them behind? Maybe she was scared by your presence & decided to come for them later when noone was around.

I wish I could help you or offer some suggestions other than calling back the rescues until they can find it in their hearts to take them from you. I wish you best of luck that there’s a happy ending for the little darlings.

I also was going to suggest that these neighbors are reported if they are allowing their pets to breed over & over. It’s unhealthy for the mother cats & can cause serious health & safety risks for the adult cats & kittens.

Prayers for you that a solution is found.

well my parents are letting me take care of them in the barn until they are a little older and able to be given to familys if they want them but im afraid they might not make it until then if their not being cared for properly. Its hard to care for them and have to keep running back and forth to the barn. It would be so much easier to care for them in the nice warm house. The local shelters just told us that is was “kitten season” and that they wont take them. They said the best they can tell us is bottle feed them and try to get them to where there a little bit older. The mother had the kittens farrr into the back of the yard (we have four acres). We can watch out our back window. She came back several times for a couple of days took one and never touched the other ones, she would sniff around and leave again.

If you can get them to eat & pee/poo, they should be ok in the barn. I know its not ideal, but its not the worst place for them to be either. If they dont want to drink kmr from a bottle, see if they want to lap it up? Or maybe they could eat some wet cat food? Poop only happens every 2-3 days, so only pee in that time is normal. Just make sure they are warm, maybe cuddle them up in a blanket, and check on them as often as you can. I recently found out you can use baby powder for fleas, which should be ok on little kittens. Can you tell me if they have any teeth yet, or whether their eyes & ears have opened yet? Their ears only ‘pop up’ when they are about 3 weeks old, so its could give a more accurate indication of their age.

If they have teeth, they should be able to eat some wet food with kmr mixed in. Maybe you can try putting them in a litterbox and see if they can pee/poo by themselves? I find with a lot of my foster kitties lately that the moms teach them litterbox-behaviour fairly early. As long as they are warm, dry & eating, i think they’ll be ok.

A hot water bottle wrapped in a towel is a good idea, but with enough room in the box so they can hop off it if they want to.

Excellent 🙂 Just make sure they have food available — they may have some catching up to do. As well as Skyron’s suggestion of using baby powder to get rid of their fleas, I would also get a flea comb and get as many of them off as you can (drop them — the fleas — in hot soapy water). Fleas can cause anaemia in little kittens so they’re NOT good. As long as they keep on putting on weight, and don’t start losing it, that’s a good sign.
