    Hi guys,

So my 6 mo. old is developing some not attractive food habits and I’m wondering if anyone has some advice.

He’s recently been very finicky with his food. He won’t eat it unless it’s fresh out of the bag (like I’m talking 10 min later and he won’t eat it) he will sniff around like he’s looking for some “good” bits but barely eats it. This is the same food he had since he started eating, so it’s not a new surprise brand.

He’s also recently decided that “people food is my food” and will go and grab/attack my food to try and eat it. He’s fond of anything with bread and cheese. He will also jump on the counter when we’re making dinner and try and steal that. It’s gotten to the point where we have to put him in the other room any time people food is out. I’m thinking this might be because he’s hungry, but he has his bowl available to him about 90% of the time so if he wanted to eat his food he can.

I know cats will do what they want, but he’s starting to be a pest sometimes and I want to try and correct his behavior if I can, since he is still young.

Does anyone have any advice? He’s normally such a sweet little boy, I hate having to put him in the other room or feel like I’m not being a good cat mom.

Oh, and he’s not sick, he went to the vet last week and was fine, this problem has been going on for about 3 weeks or so.

With cats that are food motivated, it’s easier to correct their behavior. If you have kibbles out for him all the time, stop now. You can feed him some wet food in the morning, and more at noon (if you are home). If not feed him kibbles in the morning and when he eats that, he gets no more until you return home at night–maybe a wet food meal. Yes, he will act like he is starving but he’s not. Read the directions on the package for feeding for his age and weight.

It’s also not going to hurt him if you shut him away while you are eating, especially if he is a pest at the table. I have one that does this and it’s aggravating as heck! Just be patient and don’t reward him for bad behavior like giving him table food. He has his own food and he will eat it if he’s hungry.

thank you Kittyzee….i followed your advice today and was more “strict” with giving him the food and he seemed a little better. I work from home so sometimes if he doesn’t eat all his food at breakfast or lunch i leave it out so he can graze and that’s probably not helping. I’m probably a little too indulgent with him, his face and meows are just too much sometimes. But i know it’s better for him to be healthy haha

Welcome to the kitten guilt trip and, yes, he knows what he’s doing to you. It happens to every cat purrson. Once he get used to his new feeding schedule, all will be good. Well, unless he thinks otherwise. 😉
