Abusive partners also abuse their victims’ pets, to get at them and simply because abusers of people are very often animal abusers as well. (This includes serial killers, who very often get their sick pleasure on animals first).

Many abused women hesitate to seek refuge because they don’t want to leave their pets behind, as the furry friend is their main comfort, and they fear the abusive partner will take it out on the pet left behind.

By the way, I’m saying “women” because this is about a shelter for women. I know that spousal abuse might also occur in same-sex couples, and sometimes, though much more rarely, the woman might abuse the man.

Pets are also very important to the children of a relationship that has become abusive, as cuddlers and confidantes.

This is very good news Lagatta.

Wonder/hope that this will happen here.

I recall “Ice Storm ’98”. Peeps had major probs as shelters would not accept pets. I did not have a kit at the time (adopted very first kitty in June ’99.) Some friends put me up but it was not fun and no way would they have let me bring along a kit. And even had I wanted to remain in my bldg (and frozen!) at one point there was a gas leak and police basically evacuated everyone.

Yes, I stayed in my building which had off-and-on heat cuddled up with Renzo, who was young back then; fortunately I didn’t have to stay at a shelter. I did volunteer at a nearby shelter in a former school that had become a community centre, as my workplace was closed down and it was very hard for me to work on my home computer with limited power and a far more primitive set-up. Some people were very upset, but some of the kids thought it was an adventure!

Ottawa isn’t far away and I think this and other factors may well improve how animals are treated here. I’m somewhat more hopeful than I’ve been for a long time. However it is so hard to crack down on the scourge that is puppy mills (which are sometimes kitty mills). They aren’t typically located in large cities, but in rural and semi-rural areas a couple hours’ drive away. A friend of mine is a vet in Sherbrooke (note to others, smallish city between here and Burlington Vermont, same rolling hills as there, lovely place with two universities but a lot of rural poverty nearby), and has had to accompany authorities clamping down on the baby beastie mills and trying to rehome the poor babies and the even more G-dforsaken mums…

BTW, a question for you all that are moderators–I can’t see who is here most times and get a long line of archives listed as far back as 2005, Tag Cloud Pages, and Recent Posts at the top? Is it a glitch or is it just me?

    Hi KZ,
I am not a moderator but I have not been having these problems. I’m also not a techie.

You might want to contact KM. His email is on holiday card list. If you don’t have it, I can PM you with it.

Could it be something to do with your browser? Have you been having probs with other sites?

Thanks KJ. No, no problems anywhere else, and it’s really not a problem, just weird. I’m not going to trouble him with it because it’s no big deal. 🙂

KZ/KJ, Right now I am seeing what KZ mentioned but I wasn’t last night, different computer same browser brand but possibly a different version. This morning (at that place) 8:30 EST, using Chrome v62, I don’t see who is logged on and I see the tags and long list of archives.
