    2012

October (i/É’ktˈoÊŠbÉ™r/ ok-TOH-bÉ™r) is the tenth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and one of seven months with a length of 31 days. The eighth month in the old Roman calendar, October retained its name (from the Latin “octo” meaning “eight”) after January and February were inserted into the calendar that had originally been created by the Romans.

October is commonly associated with the season of autumn in the Northern hemisphere and spring in the Southern hemisphere, where it is the seasonal equivalent to April in the Northern hemisphere and vice versa.

In common years January starts on the same day of the week as October, but no other month starts on the same day of the week as October in leap years. October ends on the same day of the week as February every year and January in common years only.

~Famous Vegetarians are Buddha, Socrates, Plato, Leonardo da Vinci, Percy Shelley, Albert Schweitzer, Leo Tolstoy, Mohandas Gandhi, George Bernard Shaw, John Harvey Kellog, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Ravi Shankar, Franz Kafka, and Oliver Goldsmith. Are you familiar with them?

~And when it comes to astronauts? There have been several vegetarian astronauts. Timothy J. (TJ) Creamer (Lieutenant Colonel, USA) NASA Astronaut (Mission Specialist Candidate). Kalpana Chawla was both a strict vegetarian and an astronaut. She died when the shuttle Columbia broke up in 2003.

    TODAY IN TRIVIA: SCALLOPS

~A scallop is a mollusk that propels itself along the bottom of the ocean by opening and closing its shell.

~The sweet, delicate meat that we eat is the muscle used to open and close the shell.

~Sea scallops are commonly harvested with dredges or bottom trawls on gravel, sand, or sand-mud bottoms.

~Sea scallops are shucked and chilled on the boats after they are caught, this is due to the fact that they cannot live out of water.

~Another way to get scallops is through having a diver. They are commonly known as Diver Scallops. They harvest scallops by hand in about 50 to 100 foot of water and often times in very poor visibility.

~Not just jumbo or large. Sea scallops can range from 10 to 40 per pound, common sizes that you may find in markets are 10 to 20, 20 to 30 or 30 to 40.

~Some sea scallops can be 2 inches in diameter, so when shopping remember that a 10 to 20 scallop will be close to the size of a half dollar.

    Today in Music

1945, Elvis Presley made his first ever-public appearance in a talent contest at the Mississippi Alabama Dairy Show singing ‘Old Shep’, Elvis was 10 years old at the time and came second.

1967, American singer, songwriter Woody Guthrie died after suffering from Huntington’s Chorea disease. Guthrie was a major influence on Bob Dylan and American folk music. The 70’s film ‘Bound For Glory’ is based on his life. His best-known song is ‘This Land Is Your Land’, which is regularly sung in American schools.

1968, Working at Trident Studios in London, The Beatles recorded the new George Harrison song ‘Savoy Truffle’. George, Paul, and Ringo recorded just one take of the basic track (drums, bass, and lead guitar). The song was inspired by Eric Clapton’s love of chocolates, particularly Mackintosh’s Good News. 1978, The members of Aerosmith bailed thirty fans out of jail after they were arrested for smoking pot during an Aerosmith concert at Fort Wayne Coliseum.

TODAY IN TRIVIA: Its COMPUTER Month. Here’s a computer class!

~It took the radio 38 years and the television only 13, but the internet reached 50 million users in only 4 years.

~The computer mouse was invented by Doug Engelbart in 1963. It was made out of wood at first. Weird, right?

~In 2009 the average number of Internet transactions per second was 2,000. The total number of goods sold was worth $60 billion.

~ Previously, hard disks in personal computers held only 20 MB of data and cost around $800. In 2010 you could get a 2 GB flash drive for around $8.

~Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, the first female admiral in the US Navy is also known in the computer world for creating the popular programming language COBOL. She also came up with the term ‘debugging’ after removing a moth from a computer.

~The computing power in today’s cell phones is much higher than the processing power of all the computers in the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander that put 2 men on the moon.

~There are over 20 billion web pages on the internet, and that number is rapidly growing every day.

~There are over 2 billion internet users worldwide at present.

~RIM (the BlackBerry operating system company) co-CEO and cofounder Mike Lazaridis dropped out of college to start his own company. He did so after reading Microsoft’s founder, Bill Gates, book.

~The first hard disk drive was created in 1979 by Seagate. Its capacity was a whopping (not!) 5 MB.

    TODAY IN TRIVIA: TACO Trivia

~In 2000, Taco Bell ran a full-page ad in the New York Times announcing that it bought the Liberty Bell to “reduce the country’s debt” and renamed it “the Taco Bell Liberty Bell.” April Fool’s!

~In September 2004, Taco Bell invited customers to “Share Your Sauce Wisdom,” printing witty phrases on hot sauce packets.

~On July 21, 2009, Gidget, the Chihuahua featured in Taco Bell ads, was euthanized after suffering a stroke. She was 15 years old.

~On January 17, 2010, founder Glen Bell passed away. He was 86 years old.

~Taco Bell is open in the US, Guam, Canada, Cyprus, Greece, Iceland, India, Philippines, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.

~But did you know that Taco Bell got its start as a hot dog stand?

~The “Bell” in Taco Bell comes from founder Glen Bell. The 23-year-old former Marine, arrived in San Bernadino, California, just after World War II with dreams of opening a miniature golf course. But after considering the costs of starting up such a venture, Bell opened something a little more affordable – a hot dog stand. Bell’s drive-in was a one-man operation.

~By 1975, Bell made a deal with PepsiCo, selling them his controlling shares of Taco Bell and in turn becoming millions richer as a major PepsiCo shareholder.

~PepsiCo opened its first international Taco Bell in Guam in 1977. And from there a taco phenomenon was launched.
