    The other my grandma found a dead cat, twenty four hours later we found a litter of kittens. The cat had been pregnant so the kittens had no mother. Litter of six, one was dead. Yesterday two more died. One was the runt and the other supposedly from dehydration. Another kitten is starting to become lethargic with it’s mouth open. It won’t drink anything. These are one day old kittens and I really don’t want to lose it!

    You need to get some pedialyte down them, with an eye dropper or spoon or whatever. You can buy it from the infants’ aisle at the supermarket or you can make it at home, I’ll give you the recipe.

    The tent test is to test for dehydration:

    Tent test: pick up a good pinch of kitten’s skin at the neck and let go.If it snaps back immediately, she’s hydrated okay. If it takes a little time to go back down, or, worse, it stays up in a ‘tent’ shape, she needs fluids, such as pedialyte (from the supermarket, children’s aisle) or home-made pedialyte below.

    Note, in the United Kingdom, pedialyte is called Dioralyte. Also known as rehydration salts.

    Home-made pedialyte:

    Pedialyte:

    Pedialyte formula (from World Health Organization)…no preservatives so short life-span

    * 1 cup water (boiled then cooled)

    * 2 tsp sugar

    * 1/8 tsp salt

    * 1/8 tsp baking soda

    this Pedialyte formula gives needed electrolytes & some sugar for energy.

    Combine all ingredients and warm slightly.

    Make new after 24 hours.

    If you don’t get some pedialyte down them, their blood sugar will crash as well as the dehydration and they won’t have much of a chance. If you can get them to a vet, he or she could give them subcutaneous fluids and show you how to do that too.

    This is the best website for raising kittens: http://www.messybeast.com/handrear.htm

    Check what it tells you about rehydrating and feeding newborn kittens.

    And watch these video clips on youtube, they will show you all the basics:

    It is not easy to raise babies whose mama has died. Best of luck with your little ones.
