my mum cat had 5 kittens 4 days ago on tuesday, and 4-5 are doing well they have put on around 10-30g in the last 3 days, but one of them is losing weight and is very small, he lost about 30g in the past 4 days, i have been hand feeding him for past 2 day but he don’t seem to be gaining weight, he is the runt of the litter. we nearly lost him when he was born as the mother had a hard labor, i been to the vets and they said to ffed him every 2-3 hours, and he able to lift his head now and isn’t so cold but he not where near as strong as the other 4 so when is comes to mum feeding them he gets pushed to the side, I’m not sure what to do to help him put the weight on. any information will help
    thanks

Hi, Natalie, yes it sounds like you will need to keep supplementing his feeding, where are you and what are you using to feed him? Kitten replacement milk is best. There is also a supplement paste called Nutrical which has extra vitamins and nutrients, get the kitten one if you can, it should be available at good pet stores or on line at a good site like Amazon or EntirelyPets.com. You can also try him on glop or goats milk (in the baking aisle at Walmart or similar stores). Here is the thread for glop (emergency kitten food) recipes, they are mostly based around evaporated or condensed milk.Best of luck with this little one.

    This is the glop thread:

If his blood sugar level crashes for any reason, this can be life threatening (he will suddenly become limp and unresponsive). In this case you need to (very carefully) force feed him some KMR right away, or stroke it on his tongue and gums, or use Karo corn syrup, sugar water or honey and do the same thing.

That’s great news, that he’s not losing weight any more, that’s the main thing. The Nutrical is a wonderful invention, it’s a good way to build them up when they’re undernourished or sick and make sure they’re getting everything they need.

Good advice already, but I wanted to add that… perhaps you are not feeding the kitten often enough? I’d hate to contradict the advice of a vet, but it sounds like the kitten is barely a week old. I hand raised a kitten from 2 weeks old, and Snow ate at 2 weeks old every 2 hours, sometimes every 1 1/2 hours if she was especially hungry. I’m not sure if the kitten is getting zero milk from mom or a little bit milk from mom, but if kitten is getting zero milk from mom, I would think the kitten would need to eat sooner than every 2 hours. If the kitten is meowing before the two hour mark for food, I would feed kitten.

sadly he passed away this morning, thanks for all the help, he never meowed if when i was feeding him or handling him, but he was very cold this night and his breathing was off, as there was a clicking kind of noise every time he breathed, i took his to the vets and they took care of the rest, thanks again
