I have a 1 week old rescue kitten (Jack) that was abandoned by his mother. He has been doing ok the past few days, but today he had bloody diarrhea. I have been giving him KMR and now I have started to add some pedialyte to the formula. I called and made an appointment this morning after I first noticed the bloody diarrhea, but the vet didn’t really have any advice on what to do because of Jack’s age. When I went to the appointment, she just told me to continue to care for him and that with a feral kitten, the survival rate is really low.

I have really gotten attached to Jack, and I would love any and all advice on how to correct this issue. Thank you!!!!

Laurie, here is a thread that deals with hand rearing kittens, I hope this offers you some help. Check the pink tags on the top right of the page too, I added one.

Other TDKers will post as they come on.

Hopefully, it’s just that he has parasites. But it is possible that his mum abandoned him because she knew he was sick. Can you take a stool sample to the vet? They can worm tiny ones, if they need to. Please don’t give him any over-the-counter worm treatments though because they would harm him, he is much too young for them, it really would have to be done by a vet. I think all you can do is what you are doing now, keep feeding him and caring for him, make sure the diarrhoea doesn’t dehydrate him. I’ll give you the link for the tent test to test for dehydration and our favourite kitten-rearing links, and hope the information on them will help. You can also click on the pink tag ‘orphans’ for many previous threads on raising orphaned and abandoned kittens.

This is a great set of videos on raising abandoned kittens:

And these written sites are really helpful too — though I see MS has already given them to you 🙂 :

Best of luck, you are wonderful for giving Jack a chance.

Thank you for replying so quickly. Jack’s diarrhea isn’t so thin today, but it now appears to have more blood in it.

The first day I got Jack, I took to the Humane Society to get information on how to raise him. She gave him some worm medicine, but after talking him to the vet, I wonder if it was too much medicine for a little kitty.

On the third day that I had him, I went to feed him and he was very lethargic. My husband held on to Jack and rubbed his body for about a half hour, after which I put him in his nest and continued to rub his back. About two hours later, he seemed fine.

He is not dehydrated at all, and he seems very active. He is still urinating and eating, and I have upped to amount of pedialyte in his bottle, but he continues to have bloody stool. I am hoping that it is just from the worms, and not something more serious.

Also thank you for the links, before I posted I had looked through the majority of the articles.
