    Hello everyone!

My husband and I just adopted a gorgeous Siamese blue point 7 month old kitten named Leo on Saturday. He is adjusting to the house very well, eating all his food, drinking water, being extremely active, and knows how to use the litter box just fine. When he first went the bathroom he peed and it smelled awful. You could literally smell it while going up the stairs to our bedroom. It didn’t smell like anything in particular, just very strong cat urine. We had a cat before (she passed away a few weeks ago, sadly) and her pee never smelled. The only time we smelled it was when we cleaned her litter box. Also, we got our kitten an entirely new litter box so he wouldn’t smell the cat we used to have.
Last night he pooped for the first time and it smelled even worse. When I inspected it, it looked like a healthy poop and wasn’t a weird shape, texture, or color.
I am thinking he may be just adjusting to the house and we are taking him to the vet later this week. Has anyone experienced anything similar with a new kitten? Any advice?

    Thank you all 🙂

PS – we are feeding him the same food that his foster mom was feeding him, so there is no new food in his diet.

    Catherine,

Sorry for the delay. Since you haven’t changed her food these are my best guesses:

    1) Anal glands are filled with a stinky fluid that your little one usually expresses when she uses the litter box. It smells horrible. Why would this happening all the time? No clue

    2) She’s not drinking enough water. If she doesn’t drink enough water, her urine will be more concentrated.

    3) She has a UTI (urinary tract infection).

Go ahead and take her to the vet. and they will be able to check all these issues. I hope they can find a solution.

    Good luck

Good idea to have these issues checked out…that is, even if they are issues…to make sure your cat doesn’t have anything going on you don’t know about. Remember, that cats, like people have different smelling pees and poos and they don’t all smell the same. Seems like a weird discussion to be having, but I have had cats that make you want to leave the room for good after they poo…others you didn’t even know they went. Also, maybe it will change for the good once he has been neutered. I don’t know if that should or would make a difference, but maybe it might–but at 7 months, he has probably already been neutered.
