    Hello!

So, I got a female kitten two days ago today, she is eight weeks old. She has not pooped once since being here, but she has peed. I was able to find out the food she was eating before she came home, and what she had been eating at her first home is what I gave her. The dry food she would eat some of it off and on through the day, she has gotten enough liquids since she always has clean water.

I am not sure if she is sick, because she has been super playful and happy running all over and playing with my brothers and I. She is climbing all over and isn’t showing any signs of discomfort or distress. She seems perfect except for not pooping.

Today I got her some wet food in hopes maybe that would stir something, nothing yet. I did try the taking a wet cotton ball and rubbing it against her behind, but she does not like that one bit, and nothing came from it.

Any suggestions on what I could try, or should I just let her be? Thanks!

Hi, Elizabeth, congratulations on your new kitten, she sounds adorable. What is her name? At eight weeks, she is old enough to take care of her own toileting, so I’m not surprised she didn’t like the cotton wool, and it’s probably just the move to a new place that has upset her wee system. At this stage I would just keep an eye on her and give her time. Dry food does tend to be more dehydrating than wet food, so I would stick with the wet food and if you’re really concerned, you could add a drop or two of mineral oil or vegetable oil (eg soya bean, or canola or olive) or just try adding a bit more water to her wet food. But I’m sure she’ll come right. Are you sure she just hasn’t pooped somewhere safe and dark and hidden and you haven’t found it yet? Make sure her litter tray is somewhere that feels safe and quiet and is out of traffic areas as kitties feel vulnerable when they are toileting. You can click the pink tag ‘constipation’ for more ideas and if she still hasn’t pooped in the next 24 hours or so, might be time for her first vet visit. She will need one anyway to arrange for her shots and get her all checked over. Best of luck!

Her name is Jane, and thank you! I will stick with the wet with water or oil for now and see what tomorrow brings. I did a second look of the rooms she has had access to as of yet and have not seen anything yet.

I do wonder if it has to do with the move and as well I am not 100% on what her life was like at the house. Jane is not litter trained yet, which I did find curious for a eight week old, but maybe it is normal. I just wonder if her poop issues stem from not having a sure digging spot like she had when she peed. (The times she peed were on the sheets I left on the floor the first day and gradually removed) I might trying moving the box someplace more hidden in the bathroom for her, maybe that would help?

Aha, her name is the same as mine, she must be a lovely kitten 😉

The litter tray doesn’t have to be hidden so much as somewhere out of the way and quiet and somewhere where she’s confident she won’t be interrupted or stepped on. In a corner, under a table, behind something are all good places. To help with the litter training, just pop her on the litter tray half an hour after she’s eaten and you can try dabbling her little toes in the litter so she gets the idea. (Don’t keep her in there till she does something, just bring her attention to it.)
If she does have an accident, mop it up with a paper towel and pop it in the litter box so she can smell it and knows what she’s supposed to do in there. Don’t use clumping litter (kittens always eat their litter when training and clumping litter might clump in her tummy) and kittens usually don’t like scented litter either, that can put them off using it. Check the tag ‘litter box’ for more ideas. I am sure you’ll soon have her trained. She will be wanting to please you, but remember that kittens are like little human kids, they get over-excited and caught short when they’re a long way away from the litter box so accidents may happen for a while. Make sure too that she can comfortably get in and out of the box.

She is doing awesome! Finally, yesterday she pooped, it was on a bed which was not as awesome. But I was still very happy.

We are still working with her to get her used to the litter box, but she got in there on her own this morning. She is coming along great!

Thanks again for the advice, tuna was the trick. 🙂
