Hi everyone, I am new here and just looking for some advice and instruction.

So this past Wednesday we were cleaning out our backyard to put the pool up. My husband was moving stuff around, and this thing jumped out at him. He got scared and chased it out of our yard then went back to cleaning. Then that is when he found them. Four baby kittens huddled in the corner of our yard, now alone and in the heat. We decided to go in the house to see if momma cat would come back. We gave it an hour, no sign of her. I called a friend who has fostered kittens in the past, and she basically told me that newborns need to eat every hour so I should go and get some kitten formula to feed them because they would die fast. So we went to the store, bought what the empolyee there recommended. We were hoping momma would be back with her kittens when we returned, but no 🙁 So we have been caring for these babies for about 5 days now. We are a busy family, we have a cat (Blue), dog (Chloe), and two young girls ages 5 months and 2 years. It has been tough. We called all the rescue shelters, SPCA’s, etc and were basically told they are not accepting any animals and they would put them to sleep if we dropped them off. We feel guilty for chasing momma away, so we decided to do all we can to save these babies.

So far, so good. They are all alive, breathing, drinking from a syringe about 5 ml per feeding. We are feeding as often as possible, every 2 hours when we are home, every 4 hours at night. We have been stimulating them to pee and poo before and after each feeding. Keeping them warm with a heating pad.

    My questions are:

How can I tell how old they are? They have their eyes open, and they crawl all around… but I have no idea about age of kittens or anything.

How much should we be feeding them? And how often? It is Hard to get up in the middle of the night, with the baby and the kittens… We are using the powdered kitten formula.

How often should they poop? All but one has pooped. The other 3 seem to have no problem, have been pooping about twice a day since Friday. This one (the black one) has not gone at all and it looking uncomfortable. He (or she?) screams when we stimulate her, and isn’t crawling as much as the others either. Yesterday I tried that triangle method that I found online, nothing. I put a lil bit of vaseline on a thermometer and poked it in the rectum a bit, nothing. I added some vegetable oil to his formula last night and yesterday, nothing yet. Anybody have any other suggestions? The vet is closed today and I can’t afford to take this kitten to the animal hospital. I have work the next two days, so if we go to the vet it wont be until Wednesday and by then it would be a week…

What else do I need to know about these babies? Their fur is all crusty, I’ve been wiping them down with baby wipes after each meal, and they still look gross! How can I get them to look at least a little clean?

Thank you for your time! 🙂

Sounds like you are doing an outstanding job, so thank you and bless you for taking care of these babies.

It’s quiet around here on the weekends so it may be awhile but more experiences folks will chime in when they can.

Kittens eyes open around three weeks, I believe, so that are at least that old.

They don’t have to poop every day but sounds like the one may be having some issues. Keep adding a little veggie oil to his formula and that may help.

Welcome to TDK and I’m sure someone will be along soon.

Welcome to TDK Chekarn! The pink tags help as there is a lot of information posted. Maybe a bath might help them. Make sure that they stay in a place warm after bathing. You are doing a wonderful job helping these kittens! Check out the tags and know that more help is on the way on Monday!

Thanks for your reply! 3 weeks old? Wow. That’s great to hear.

Do you know how much oil to add? And how often to give it? Yesterday I added 1 ml oil then 4 ml of the formula… and gave it around 4p then again around midnight. Thank you.

I found your site this morning when I was googling about the issue. It seemed like you all helped out a guy about 10 months ago with his two orphaned kitties. I am just looking for advice and support because I am doing this on a whim and just hoping for the best! I feel like these kitties are my own children now… lol. I am worrying about them as much as I do my two daughters.

http://www.messybeast.com/handrear.htm (great tips for little ones)

Actually kittens open their eyes between 1-2 weeks and toddle more than walk until they are about 3-4 weeks.

Thank you! I checked out the timberkatz site, and from the pics these kittens appear to be at least 2 weeks old. But not quite 3 weeks yet.

The whole poop thing with the black kitten is my biggest concern right now. That and my two year old torturing them! Accidently of course. But they seem to really kling to her when we let them out of their box, so I am just teaching her how to be gentle and hoping for the best at this point.

Glad that the pictures helped, at this age they may not poop everyday or after every meal (check out the messybeast link for more info on that). Good idea to help the two year old start to be gentle with them, good life lesson.

We have had them since Wednesday afternoon and the black one has not pooped at all… do you know if that many days is normal? The others have gone every day since Friday and they have all been eating the same amount and this is why I am feeling nervous.

Also, how long is the kitten formula (from the powder) good for in the fridge, once mixed?

    Thanks

Don’t know about the kitten formula and the pooping, there will others on who have raised kittens this young. Its the weekend though so it may be slow.

I don’t have experience with such young kittens but I just wanted to say that you are doing a great job!

Every other day is okay for kittens to poop; four days is too long. Can you get someone else to take the black one to the vet tomorrow? Maybe a neighbor or friend? Wednesday may be too late, especially if he is in discomfort now.

I called the vet and spoke to someone who fosters kittens. Basically she told me two things: 1. Maybe he pooped with his momma sometime Wednesday and now his body is adjusting to the formula. He just needs time to let nature take its course. Or 2. That usually in a litter one of the cats has a defect with the most common being that the bowel does not attach to the rectum. This would mean expensive surgery which I would be opting out of anyways. I am hoping for number 1 but still no luck. I have work 7a til 7p tomorrow. I made an appointment for 330p hoping my husband could take him. Then I remembered the baby has her checkup at 2 tomorrow. So kitty is gonna just have to hang on a bit longer. Gonna try to reschedule for Tuesday, but the office is closed now.

If anybody has any more tips to get the kittie to poo, they would be much appreciated!

    Thank you,

Do you have anyone that will be feeding the kittens when you are @ work since you work a twelve hour shift?

So the troublesome kitten has finally went potty today! My husband was so excited when he did that he called me at work to tell me the news.

    Still have a few questions:

How long does the formula last in the fridge once mixed?

When can we introduce the litter box?

Is there anything I should be concerned about with the kittens and my two girls? How would I know if they had any kind of diseases or worms or whatever and can my girls get sick from touching or being around these babies? After all they were found outdoors and I have no idea if momma cat was sick or what… I worry about my girls kissing their fur and stuff, of course my human babies come first!

And if anyone can explain this poop issue we’ve been having… should they be pooping everyday? How much? And if they don’t go for a day or two should I panic and add the veggie oil to the formula again?

Any other info or advice would be appreciated…

    Thanks again

That’s very good news about the kitten :D. I would think it would say on the tin how long the formula should last when mixed but I wouldn’t keep it beyond a day. You can start introducing the litter box at three weeks, they probably won’t get the hang of it until around four weeks but you never know. Of course you need to use a little pan, something they can easily hop in and out of. By ‘girls’, I take it you mean human girls. They CAN catch parasites/worms/ringworm/fleas etc from the kittens so a vet trip for the kittens is a good idea for a general check-up. Don’t give the kittens over the counter parasite remedies, they’re much too young for that, only the vet can treat them safely. Your girls won’t catch any diseases or viruses, since cat diseases don’t cross the species barrier to humans. There is something called cat scratch fever (mild and often symptomless, occasionally flu-type symptoms) but as long as your girls’ immune systems are normal, that shouldn’t be a problem, and antibiotics take care of it.

Powdered KMR does seem to cause constipation issues, you should see how many queries we get about it. You could try using the ready-mixed or you could use canned goats’ milk (in the baking aisle at Walmart) or just keep adding a drop or two of vegie oil when a problem crops up. For further info and advice, check out the pink tags ‘orphans’, ‘poop’ and ‘constipation’ and these websites aren’t quite as informative as messybeast but are still good and cover some different things (one of them has a feeding chart). Good luck!

Thank you very much for that information!

But now you have me a little nervous…. you said my daughters can catch parasites/worms/ringworm/fleas etc. How would I know if the kittens have any of these? The fleas, I have checked them and haven’t seen anything. But I am not sure how to check for the others. And I thought all cats were born with worms and that it way they need to get to the vet around 6 weeks of age?

I called the vet and my vet wants $50 per kitten for a check up… $200 total at least! I have to call around to find a cheaper place to take them because I don’t have that kind of money… We had an appointment today for the one kittne with the poop problem but canceled it when all was cleared… I was hoping to hold out til they were 6 weeks and do the deworming appointment and check up in one to save money.

I love this kitties, but if they get my daughters sick in any way they are out the door! Please let me know if there is any way to prevent those things you mentioned. Thanks again for all this info…

Sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you. Most kittens do have worms and six weeks is a good age to treat them at. If the kittens had fleas, you would see them, and if they had ringworm, you would see scabs and little bald patches –their fur would start falling out. If you make sure your daughters take normal precautions around pets (I would avoid letting the girls kiss them or put their mouths near them until the kits are older and have been checked out, but ordinary petting and stroking is fine, and always get them to wash their hands well after handling the kittens), they should be fine. Even if the girls did, in the worst-case scenario, catch worms, a de-worming tablet would take care of that.

That is a LOT of money. Ring around all your local vets. Most areas have some kind of low-cost vet care, even if just for spaying and neutering, it would be worth contacting your local shelters to ask if they have any info on local low-cost vet care. Also google low-cost vet care for your area. My vet would only charge for one appointment, even if it involved four kittens, especially for just a check-up, unless he had to dose them all or something.

I found this page for low-cost options in Philadelphia:

    http://citykitties.org/find-help/vet-clinics/

And I see you’re an RN so just make sure your girls take normal hygiene precautions and everything should be fine 😀
