Hello, today I was given a kitten my friends found on the side of the road. They took it to a vet who gave them special food and eye drops but said it was healthy otherwise. It looks to be about 2-4 weeks old but I am not sure as it severely malnourished. I have cared for strays before so I am confident I will nurture her back to health however one thing that really concerns me is the kittens very swollen belly. Does anyone have experience with this?

    HI Tiffany,

Thanks for giving this wee kit a chance. Without you, it has no chance at all.

Being an outdoor kit, it probably has worms. Just about every kit has worms (even indoor ones) but esp. outdoor kits because they get them from their mom. You didn’t say if the vet. gave the kit a dewormer so find out. It should have the first shot around 2-3 weeks.

Do keep in touch; I want to know how you’re getting along. 🙂

The kitten was doing well, eating and playing normally and his/her belly was going down. Today I noticed he/she was sleeping a lot and wouldn’t come eat (very strange for him/her). When I tried to coax him/her out of the house I realized he/she could barely walk and kept falling over. The vet said he/she has worms and his/her belly was the cause of the paralysis. I gave him/her the meds and I trust my vet but wondering if anyone has seen this before?? My friends bengal had the same symptoms 4 weeks ago and despite treatment sadly died a few days ago. Really hoping this isn’t the same thing ????

Get the kitten back to the vet asap! It could have a very large worm burden and cannot pass all the worms at once, and may have a blockage. They can tell by palpating the intestines. Or maybe something else could be wrong.
