So my kitten Felix is almost 6 months old now, when I first adopted him he had contracted a feline upper respiratory infection. He was given anti biotics and eye drops. He went through all the medication and things seemed fine. His eye gunk started to come back and I noticed his purring is still a little bubbly at times. The past two weeks I noticed one time he got too excited and was breathing really heavy and he was weezing and wouldnt stop until I calmed him down and slowed down his breathing. Just the other day he started like heaving and coughing and I thought it would be a hair ball coming up but nothing came out, again after he was playing too hard and got too excited. Has anyone had this happen to them? I was going to get the vet to check him over before his neuter on the 20 of January.

Poor fella.. Firstly I’m delighted to hear your getting him neutered!!

A lot of the time URI are caused by the feline herpes virus.. It can cause continuous URI flare ups in times of stress or when a cat is still quite young..

Adding L-lysine to his diet would help clear up these URI but if the eye has a discharge a yellow/green colour the eye will probably need antibiotics to clear that infection..

As for the coughing and breathing issues it could possibly be asthma but a vets visit is a good idea I think…

Are you sure he’s not just playing too hard and panting because he’s completely exhausted himself? That would be normal, if so, but if you’re worried, for your own peace of mind, I always think a vet visit is best. I know it’s not good for the bank balance and it may mean other sacrifices but it is good for your stress levels and for your kitty, and that really matters.

How would I incorporate l-lysine into his diet? And jcat I’ve only noticed it a couple times and it’s more of a cough and weeze.

Hi Cjay – my Comet coughs sometimes too, I’m wondering if it’s asthma. I give l-lysine treats to Leela so going to try it on him. If Felix likes treats, it might go over well. If he catches on it’s meds, like Leela did, mix the treats and randomly slip him a l-lysine treat.

Off topic: I don’t have your email but want you to know I sponsored a bulb for Felix on my hometown animal shelter holiday tree as per the thread I started in November. If you want a copy of the program & a pic I took of the tree, email me at lv655b at yahoo dot com. (Put something relavent to “TDK” in the subject.)

Hey again.. I you can find L-lysine treats that’s great for a daily intake in an otherwise healthy cat.. If it is feline herpes and he’s symptomatic I would try and get a higher dosage into his diet.. I can’t get L-lysine treats in Ireland so I get my L-lysine supply in the local health food shop ..it comes in 500mg tablets that you can crush and add to wet food.. None of mine mind it at all .. One 500mgs tablet a day for a 6 month old will be fine and if it’s a particularly bad flare up one tablet in morning and one in the evening.. It’s also reccomended to add
L-lysine to your cats diet before a vet visit or a move so it counteracts the stress that’s normally causes the flare ups in the first place..
