I wish my first post wasn’t this… because I love my cats and would love to post pics and tell daily stories of the debacle they cause! but I am in a bit of a panic tonight becasue one of my orphaned kitten (4 weeks old, Female, 14.8 oz) bit off a portion of the bottle’s nipple (half the nipple about ¼ inch) About 3 hours ago. Should I Induce vomiting using Hydrogen Peroxide 3%?

I read through here, other online sites, PetMD, Called UPENN animal hospital, and Philadelphia Animal Hospital. I’m more or less worried… The little guys have me tied around their “claw” ugg…

What did they say, LB? I’m assuming the kitten swallowed it? Unless you’ve received advice to the contrary from a vet, or he is visibly choking, I would not want to induce vomiting as it could cause more problems than it would solve. Hopefully the nipple will pass through without doing any harm. But I am not a vet and you really need a vet’s advice.

Thanks for the quick response JKAT!

Yes… only noticed it when we were done feeding. We couldnt find it on the ground or feeding chair anywhere, so we assume she swollowed it.

Pretty much UPENN receptionist told me it is a 50/50 chance it will get stuck and PAH Receptionist said not to induce vomiting because “I don’t know what I am doing”. I am going to bring both kittens, “Indy” and “Lucky… the one in question”, in for a checkup tomorrow to PAH. I think Lucky will be fine but man both myself and my Girlfriend are quite worried. I just figured out inducing vomiting for soft objects must happen within a 2 hour period, after that the object will enter the intestines and will not come out with vomit. Ill just let it pass and figure out what to do if it doesn’t. Thanks everyone… Ill give an update from what the Doc says tomorrow.

You’re welcome. I would continue to have a good long hunt for the nipple top on the ground as to find it would stop you worrying and may save you some vet bills. The only good thing is that it’s soft and all of a piece so hopefully it won’t cause problems or get stuck, but the vet check-up is always a good idea to put your mind at rest.

If it does cause a blockage, signs to look out for are vomiting at one end and constipation or straining at the other (and nothing coming out). I would look up your emergency vet clinic number now and keep it by the phone, just in case, since it’s always good to have it on hand.

I hope everything is ok but you NEED to take it to the vet. I heard a story from someone fostering 2 of the 4 from a litter I had that one of her prior litters bit off a nipple, it swelled in his stomach and killed him. The nipple WILL swell. I recommend a vet visit before they have to do anything drastic. You can never be too safe.
