Hello I have started my kittens on powdered goat’s milk due to severe constipation and blood in stool (fecal float showed no parasites). Vet said probably formula related.
I have had them since day one. Both are gaining weight great. 11 days old going on 12. About 8 oz each.

The question for the goat’s milk. I have read different things on mixing it.

Does it need to be mixed stonger for kittens? Or just regular strength.

I have noticed they have started crying for food at 2 hours instead of 3.
So I am wondering if it needs to be mixed stonger than instructions on the tin.

Otherwise I will continue to feed more often. They are eating about 7-7.5 ml every 3hours. But started crying at 2. So I am feeding at 2 hours now.

    Hi Chelsea,

Your kittens have a very good meowmy! Goats’ milk is an excellent food for kittens. You don’t need to make it stronger. You should increase the amount of milk per serving. Kits will eat as much as they want so, unless you forcing the milk into them, you really can’t overfed a kitten.

When they’re about 5 weeks old you can mix wet food in their milk and make a gruel. Put it in the bottle and that will help fill them up. By the next week or so, put the gruel on a plate/bowl. When they are 7-8 weeks they can eat wet food on their own. Kits are usually weaned about 8-10 weeks but for hoomins that many weeks is not always practicable.

You’re doing great and I hope to hear more about your kits.

That makes me feel better. All the stuff I was reading online said not to overfeed and to feed by weight.
I just fed them till they were full. So we will see how that holds them over for the next 3 hours.
They may also have been crying for snuggles.not completely sure. I have a disability and yesterday I just couldn’t snuggle as much as usual.
I am going to stick to the goat’s milk regular strength then.

I am snuggling them lots today.

They have been on the goat’s milk for 2 days now. This is day 3. And no poop I am going to add olive oil to their milk.
They have had trouble pooping since day 1.

It’s been 3 days since their last poop. Is that normal?

They should poop within the next day or so. Even though you changed formulas, they may have a hard one they’re having trouble passing. I don’t like the idea of an enema but if it’s necessary the vet should be able to tell you. I only mention this because you said they have had issues with constipation. The link for the triangle method for stimulating kittens is below.

There are going to be times when we just can’t spend a lot of time snuggling. What you can do, is put one of your (unwashed) shirts in their nest and a soft squishy stuffed toy. Kits will often use this for comfort and extra attention.

I did the shirt thing, and they love it!

I tried the triangle method to no avail..

    Will try again next feeding.

    How long is too long?

I just weighed them. At 13 days old. The boy weighs 9.2 oz. And the girl weighs 8.6

I feel 5 days is the max. a kit should go without a bowel movement. Hopefully, they’ll have had a movement but I would call the vet. this afternoon.
