    Hey Everyone,

So I found out that Lucy has roundworms. She has her second de-worming appointment to be on the 10th (her first was on the 25th), but I had a few questions. Aside from keeping the litter box clean and washing my hands and what not, I would like to ask a few specific questions.

    1. Should she not sleep in my bed until after she’s been worm free? I’m inclined to say yes, but I’d like confirmation, since she’ll cry a storm if I crate her. I REALLY don’t want to get infected too.

    2. Do y’all know what to do about my carpet? The first day she came home (I live in a carpeted apartment) she had dried poo on her fur and she was running around my room, which is carpeted. How can I clean it well enough to be sure there are no eggs? what about the other surfaces? Should I bleach them?

    3. On a scale of 1-10, how likely is it for me get infected? She has slept with me the past two nights, very close to my face. the first night she was rather gassy.

    4. Am I being crazy and over-reactive? I don’t want her to get re-infected, nor do I want to catch them.

Glad you found out early on, Lucy’s friend. In answer to your questions:

    1) Yes
    2) Get the carpet professionally cleaned. Home cleaners don’t get water hot enough to kill the roundworms/larvae.
    3) 2 (wear a mask when cleaning her litter box so you don’t inhale dust),
    4) Unless you’re pulling your hair out, I don’t think you’re over reacting.

Bleach is good, HOWEVER, it is hard on you, Lucy and fabrics. I would let the professionals clean it up.

Let us know how it goes

Thanks for the advice! I’ll see how much a professional carpet cleaner costs, and is a 2 low? (1 is “no chance”, 10 is “certain to happen”)?

Also, my room is the only place I can keep her for now, so will she be okay running around after I get the carpet cleaned?

How should I schedule her playtime/free time until I actually get the apartment cleaned?

Should I crate her while I’m at work?

I’ll be sure to keep y’all posted.

I found this video discussing roundworms (for a puppy, but it’s still valid) on Youtube. It really helped to assuage my fears of becoming Patient Zero in the roundworm apocalypse. So, my plan is this:

    1. Crate her at night until the fecal tests come back negative for roundworms. I can already anticipate her caterwauling… ):

    2. Rent a steam cleaner tomorrow, and use it.

    3. Stay clean in general i.e clean her litter box weekly, wash the scooper each time I use it, wash my hands before I eat, etc…

    4. Get a professional steam clean next week, if I can find a steam cleaner that is willing to work with my apartment complex, given their bad reputation.

    5. Wash my sheets, clothes, and shoes to the best of my ability.

    6. In the daytime, let her run around. I can just wash my sheets every night for the next while.

    What do y’all think?

That sounds like a game plan. Why do you want to rent a steam cleaner and then have a professional come in? At this point, you can wait until next week. Well, I was thinking ( 😮 ) about you having to have re-clean the carpet after she get a clean result. Ask her vet. if you should shampoo now or wait until she get clean results. Carpet cleaning is expensive so see if you can save some money.

I think I’m just a little grossed out to be honest! I read that the eggs won’t become infectious from one week to a one month, depending on the source, so assuming she deposited some on the carpet Saturday, I really should clean them up ASAP. I’ll call the vet in the morning, and see what she says.

I’ll let y’all know what’s going on soon!
