    The Tomato Company

An unemployed man is desperate to support his family of a wife and three kids.

He applies for a janitor’s job at a large firm

and easily passes an aptitude test.

The human resources manager tells him, “You will be hired at minimum wage of $5.35 an hour. Let me have your e-mail address so that we can get you in the loop. Our system will automatically

e-mail you all the forms and advise you when to start and where to report on your first day.”

Taken back, the man protests that he is poor and has neither a computer nor an e-mail address.

To this the manager replies, “You must understand that to a company like ours that means that you virtually do not exist. Without an e-mail address you can hardly expect to be employed by a high-tech firm. Good day.”

Stunned, the man leaves not knowing where to turn and having $10 in his wallet, he walks past a farmers’ market and sees a stand selling 25 lb. crates of beautiful red tomatoes. He buys a crate, carries it to a busy corner and displa ys the tomatoes. In less than 2 hours he sells all the tomatoes and makes 100% profit. Repeating the process several times more that day, he ends up with almost $100 and arrives home that night with several bags of groceries for his family.

During the night he decides to repeat the tomato business the next day. By the end of the week he is getting up early every day and working into the night. He multiplies his profits quickly.

Early in the second week he acquires a cart to transport several boxes of tomatoes at a time, but before a month is up he sells the cart to buy a broken-down pickup truck.

At the end of a year he owns three old trucks. His two sons have left their neighborhood gangs to help him with the tomato business, his wife is buying the tomatoes, and his daughter is taking night courses at the community college so she can keep books for him.

By the end of the second year he has a dozen very nice used trucks and employs fifteen previously unemployed people, all selling tomatoes. He continues to work hard.

Time passes and at the end of the fifth year he owns a fleet of ni ce trucks and a warehouse that his wife supervises, plus two tomato farms that the boys manage. The tomato company’s payroll has put hundreds of homeless and jobless people to work. His daughter reports that the business grossed over one million dollars.

Planning for the future, he decides to buy some life insurance.

Consulting with an insurance adviser, he picks an insurance plan to fit his new circumstances. Then the adviser asks him for his e-mail address in order to send the final documents electronically.

When the man replies that he doesn’t have time to mess with a computer and has no e-mail address, the insurance man is stunned, “What, you don’t have e-mail? No computer? No Internet? Just think where you would be today if you’d had all of that five years ago!”

“Ha!” snorts the man. “If I’d had e-mail five years ago I would be sweeping floors at Microsoft and making $5.35 an hour.”

Which brings us to the moral of t he story:

Since you got this story by e-mail, you’re probably closer to being a janitor than a millionaire.

    Sadly, I received it also.

Evening Deb, Positive Vibes that your sons new career is a great success. Wow, working the monitors for Slash, great job!

I’m with you on where were the parents at the Golf & Stuff, wee kiddies can move fast but when around water you need to be extra vigilant.

The Yosemite fires are nasty especially with the water supply and the sequoias being threatened. I’m pleased they will do what they can to save the trees.

    LOL, love that joke.

It is sad about Linda Ronstadt having Parkinsons and not being able to sing.

We have had a sometimes wet day here and the evening is slightly cold but we can’t be bothered lighting the fire. HRH is curled up in her tent asleep.

Evening Jan 🙂 I thought it was a good start too, he is working both tonight and tomorrow for them.

It is sad about Linda losing her voice, she is from this area I believe. Supposedly I have all the markers for Parkinson’s which scares me to tears at times.

Overcast most of the day here, no rain though. Short-handed in here but knock on wood its not busy right now.

Deb, don’t get ahead of things and scare the heck out of yourself.

Just watching Shadz, she has abandoned her tent and taken over Dad’s chair and is bathing.

Hoping it will be dry tomorrow so airy and I can finish the lawns. This will be the first time they have been mown since Winter began and are likely to take off after this. Not really looking forward to getting back to fortnightly and then weekly mowings but we have had a few months rest from the lawns.

I’m heading off to bed shortly, just have to make sure the house is shipshape for the night.

Hope your shift is going well tonight.

Sweet dreams and chin scritches for The Crew.

    Nighty night.

Oh I am not believe me, just watch for signs it starts to get active if it ever does.

Tonight is actually nice even though short-handed (crossing fingers it stays that way), so sleep well , have sweet dreams and scritches to HRH in the morning.

Morning, Deb. Congrats to your son, what a great gig 🙂 I agree with MS, anticipating trouble never does any good & you have quite enough to deal with as it is.

I just did a good thing (I hope) and signed back up for the gym I had to quit when the old job went away. I decided to use a little bit of the money I inherited from my aunt to do something good for myself, so there 🙂 Most of it’s tucked away in savings, but I got a few things for the household and did this for me.

    Morning Kilroy and Joan!

Sorry been wrapped up on ancestry.com finding relatives with confusing info, lol.

Kilroy, great on the gym! I know, having the markers is one thing that I just keep in the back of my mind just in case….not really spazzing about it.

Joan, I know I am proud of him and hope that he was wonderful at it.

Hi everyone. Its been ages since I last posted, but I do lurk everyday. A lot has happened in my life over the past year or so. You may remember I had seven dogs and three kitties at one time and lived in my own house in queens, n.y. but I was a pack rat, the house was filled to the brim with lots of things, books, small electronics, kitchenware, and tons and tons of clothes, many still in shopping bags. I suffered from ocd. Since I served in the USA army during the Vietnam war era, I went to the v.a. hospital and got help. My house was sold in a short sale last march and by the grace of the Good Lord and a wonderful real estate agent I was able to rent an affordable apartment a few blocks from my former house where I had lived for forty five years. I now live with two of my dogs, lukie age 16, and Patrick, 10 years old. Both small poodles. Two of my dogs, Cafe and Sandy, chihuahuas, were rehomed to a wonderful family over a year ago. They were 13 years old at the time. Last Thursday, my little Belle, was put to sleep. She was blind from cataracts for the past two years, and had stopped eating. Belle was born in my house over 15 years ago and was the smallest pup in a litter of four. She was really an angel on earth, the gentlest toy poodle ever. I know she is in the garden of St. Francis, waiting for all of us to be together again one day. Her mom, Jackie, passed last January from kidney failure. Five days latter, my little female, Piro, was also put to sleep because of heart and breathing problems. Both toy poodles were over 15 years old. Three of my family have crossed the Rainbow Bridge this year. And two of my kitties were rehomed, shortly before I had to leave the house when it was being sold. The third kitty, Snowey was lost to the streets during the move process. I am still upset over that, and it was entirely the fault of the investors and their construction crew for that tragedy. They were very mean and cold to me during the whole selling and moving process. I try not to think about it too often and ask God to help me understand and forgive. So I have had many events happen in my life over the 15 months or so, but with the grace of the Good Lord and the help of two therapists at the V.A. I have managed to go on. Sorry for this long saga, I know everyone has their own problems, but I just wanted to bring TDK friends up to date. Regards to all. Bobby

Hi Bobby, welcome back. I’m glad to hear that you have mostly landed on your feet, but I’m really sorry about all the furbabies you’ve lost, especially Snowey. I hope that one of the wonderful rescue groups in Queens was able to find her & help her (her?).

Hi kilroy thanks so much for the welcome back. The only small comfort in all of this is that Snowey was a street cat in the early partof her life. I adopted her from my vets office about six or seven years ago, she had been living in a cage for about two months at that time. One of the vet techs rescued her from the streets in her neighborhood and had known Snowey for a while. snowey had several litters of kittens when she was only a kitten herself. Snowey was a beautiful girl, a large framed ccalico, all snowy white on the bottom half of her back, with a calico blanket on the top half. And a beautiful face. There is a former neighbor, two houses down from my old house who also fed the street cats. I had a small group that I fed in the backyard, and I know this neighbor would feed them too if they came to her back door. So I am hopeful that Snowey is at least having food and water available. I still visit the street were I lived from time to time, I rent a garage on that block, and I am always on the lookout whenever I’m there.

{{{Poochi}}} I think cats rescued from the streets never forget their resourcefulness, so if there was a source of food around, I bet Snowey has found it. I am sorry for your losses, but glad you are doing okay overall.

Comet is back home after getting out for only a few minutes. He saw Zinga outside and threw his weight into the door and it opened – he’s a solid boy. Hubby went along the street and I went thru the yard. Heard his collar jingle in the neighbor’s driveway and slowly walked to him and quietly talked to him. He was poofed; I think he was as frightened as we were.

I was really hoping he was grasping the concept of associating the harness with being outside. Guess that goes out the window when there’s a kitty outside to play with; after all, the kitty inside doesn’t want to play with him!

Oh and looking for a black cat in a neighborhood of black cats is challenging – saw 3 black cats while looking for the one with the white tip on his tail!

Glad your wandering boy is home safe, Joan. Comet, knock it off! Mama worries about you.

What a scare with Comet! Glad he is home safe. Bless his heart wanting a kitty friend…

I’m getting excited to start school with my boys tomorrow. We are starting some new things and will be digging into some literature that I wish I had read growing up. Oh well, I’ll get to experience it with them.

Thanks Joan. I also think Snowey will remember her times on the street and I can only hope that she can find food.

What a scare Comet must have given you and your husband. Our little friends are so fast when it comes to doors especially when they know there is another feline on the other side of the door. Comet you stay inside from now on.

Evening all!…. Glad our boy Comet is back home safely! (don’t scare Meowmy like that!!)

…. I made some (not much) progress toward cleaning today, but just couldn’t see to get myself too motivated! ….. Son and Mr. AV arrived safely in NYC, passed out on air mattresses late last night, and have been hard at it all day…. I’m so thankful that Mr. AV can be there for Son to help him and get him settled ….. it’s a big step moving to NYC all by yourself at 25 (MY BABY!)
