Hi all. I am hand rearing a kitten for the first time. He was found when he was 2 weeks old and now he’s 4 weeks. Just recently he had diarrhea due to rancid KMR milk powder (Was feeding it Petalac and the powder turned rancid in 3 days!). We took him to a vet and he was given antibiotics, some pills and was put on Prescription Diet a/d. Since he just reached 4 weeks old, we have not started weaning him yet so he wasn’t able to eat the food given. We diluted the paste with some warm water and bottle fed him with it. He’s very much active and very vocal but his stomach became really round and he hasn’t peed or pooped in the last 8 hours. We will only be able to get him to the vet in 6 hours time as I am working. What should be the best solution temporarily?

You can try stimulating him with a cotton ball and warm water. Wet the cotton ball and rub his anus and genitalia a little roughly to see if he potties.

Hi Chaos. We generally do that before feeding and after feeding him. He used to pee like there’s no tomorrow and likes to pee on me. Just this time even with stimulation there’s no pee or poo 🙁

This does not sound good. I’m assuming since you have been raising him up till this point, and he is not weaned yet, that you are familiar with stimulating him to pee/poo?

No poop on its own could just be his body adjusting to the new food he is on and recovering from the rancid kmr. But the no peeing bit is really worrying. Are you sure he has not been going on his own/having accidents? If not, he needs to get back to the vet asap. The only thing you can do in the meantime is to keep him comfortable and stimulate him to see if anything happens.

He may be relieving himself elsewhere like skyron said. Usually at 4 weeks they can go on their own. If you are sure he isnt going on his own he should go to a vet asap.

He’s not going on his own. We keep him in a cage with a towel he sleeps on and we constant check the towel to see if it’s wet. My sister is at home checking keeping an eye on him. For now, we stop giving him the food (because he’s abdomen is so bloated) and just giving him ORS to keep him hydrated before taking him to the vet later. Ah, I’m just so worried as he’s my first kitten.

In my opinion – I’m not a vet – you need to stop giving him fluids. If something has happened to compromise his kidney functioning, or his bladder so he physically can’t urinate, he should not get any more fluids. If you are worried that he is dehydrated you can do the tent test with his skin and then give him fluids if necessary.

Thanks for the suggestion Skyron. I called home to check, he pooped on his own. Not diarrhea but normal poop. Still not peeing. At least one worry is down. Now to go through the day patiently till he goes to the vet.

Hi all! An update about the kitty. He’s doing good. The vet says he has a lot of gas from the food and that’s what causing him not to pee. Rubbing his stomach for a few minutes after meals helped him release all his pee and the abdomen isn’t bloated anymore 🙂
