We have a kitten who’s mom passed. She’s almost 3 weeks old. We’ve had her for 3 days and she finally has begun eating much better. Wouldn’t eat the first day, but ate 85-90mL yesterday. Ate about 65mL so far today (still has 2 more feedings today). Her urine was really yellow when we first brought her home, but after getting some liquids in her, it has cleared up and is now clear to very very light yellow. She had 2 bowel movements today, both of which were not loose and were light brown in color. So she appears to be doing well in that department. My big concern is her urine smells awful. Almost a dead “fishy” smell to it. Any suggestions on what is causing this?
She is hydrated and I’ve done all the skin tests/palate tests to make sure and she’s hydrated.

I should add that she’s on formula. The powdered GNC kind.

I don’t have any idea why her urine has that smell, but will say that cats have urine that has a strong smell because in the wild they use it to ‘mark’ territory. Give her some time and good food, that may all change. A lot of us use goat’s milk when hand rearing kittens. I have personally found that the KMR powder causes constipation in kittens and is an aggravation because it’s hard to get them to poop regularly. It also contains probiotics which is good for their digestive systems. You can find it in the refrigerated milk section of the grocery, or in the baking aisle in cans. The canned is condensed, so add water 1 to 1. I am also going to post some links for you to read up on about hand rearing kittens. They contain everything you could possibly run into while hand rearing. If you need help or have questions, please come back and tell us!

You can pick up some (baby) pedilyte to add liquid to her diet. You can mix it into the concentrated Goats’ milk. You will mix it 1:1. It won’t hurt her and can prevent dehydration.

My kitten has this same issue all the suddon. She is 10 days old today. I called the vet, she said that as long as she is eating and pooping n peeling, she’s probably fine, but im still worried. Iv been giving her pedialyte which I stopped giving her thinking that might be the issue… also stopped using non sented baby wipes. This is my first bottle baby.. maybe I’m just paranoid.. but it stiiinks
