I recently rescued an orphaned 4 week old kitten. I got her from a friend who found her and had been giving her cows mil k every 8 hours . I’ve had her 2 days and am giving her KMR every3-4 hours. She drinks roughly 30ml per feeding at a time. The first feeding she drank 60 c.c and threw up, so I am giving her smaller quantities more frequently and she hasn’t thrown up. She weighs 8 ounces and had a watery eye and upper respiratory infection. I took her to the vet today and got her dewormed and an antibiotic for her eye. She didn’t have a temp and the vet gave her a super quick exam. Im,concerned because she has watery diarrhea for 24 hours now. The vet said its common and not to worry but I have grown so attached and want to do everything right . I’m wondering should I give her watered down formula or pumpkin or less food? I don’t want to take all good away as she seemed half starved when I got her. Am I just paranoid or should I take her to a more thorough vet or just wait? Thanks for the help ! I haven’t raised one this young before and want her to survive, she’s the prettiest and sweetest little cat and I’m already head over heels in love with her .

Hi Nicole, it’s good that you have taken this kitten to raise, as cow’s milk is not a good supplement for mother’s milk. The formula is okay, but what a lot of us like to use is goat’s milk. It’s easier on their tummies and has probiotics for their gut. You can find it in the refrigerated section where the milk is or in the baking aisle in cans. The canned is condensed, so add water 1 to 1. Everytime you switch a food, it usually shows in their poop. Not surprising, she has diarrhea, but also if you continue on the KMR, you more than likely will be dealing with constipation before too long. I found that KMR powdered causes it and the liquid KMR diarrhea. If you would feel better, you can always take her to another vet, you don’t want the diarrhea to continue very long as she will get dehydrated. A lot of vets don’t know a lot about hand rearing kittens, as most haven’t done it. I’m going to post some links for you, I’ve used them over and over while hand rearing. Good luck, and we are here if you need us if problems arise.
