    Hello everyone.

I was wondering whether anyone has any advice on keeping kittens entertained, and making some toys.

I have bought mittens a number of toys, including scratch post, tunnel, balls, cuddly toys.

But can anyone reccomend any in particular their kittens love? Or somethings that are homemade and keep to make?

I want to make my kittens life as enjoyable as possible 🙂

Here are some things my kitties love to play with: catnip puffs (very inexpensive at Petsmart….just like colored cotton balls soaked in catnip), plastic drinking straws (scooting them around a tile floor or chasing as I drag them across the floor or up the scratching post), lightweight plastic things like milk jug rings. They also love cardboard boxes of various shapes and sizes and paper bags. Of course, a second kitten is the best plaything, but I know that isn’t an option for everyone. (And it doesn’t do away with the need to keep them entertained. I have three and still spend a lot of time meeting their play needs.)

In my experience, on of the most important (and funnest) parts of being a kitten mom is interactive play…having certain toys that they have to have you involved to play with. Examples are wand toys (“daBird” is a good one) where they chase something on a string, dragging string for them to chase (never leave it out with kitty unattended…very dangerous if swallowed), or laser pointer (a big hit at my house.) The kitties are so cute practicing their “hunting” skills with these types of toys. Mine look forward to this time every day and I think it makes for better behaved kittens.

Your kitten might also be entertained by having a window perch or special spot where they can look outside. Mine really enjoy that as well.

    Good luck!

When Zappo was a youngster, he had a large flat cardboard box with holes cut in it so he could stick his paw in and bat the ping-pong balls inside around.

When Catkin was a kitten, he enjoyed the “Kong Kickeroo”. You could make something similar by stuffing an old sock. Where I work, I have access to discarded cardboard boxes; I take them home, cut peepholes in them and let the cats hide inside. You can then dangle a string or toy outside the hole and let them paw at it. My dad’s Velvet lowed the “paw game”; I would poke a toy under a door when she was on the other side and she would stick her paw through. Polly likes to chase a shoestring. Some cats will chase ping-pong balls in the bathtub. Some of it seems to depend on the cat, although “daBird” seems to be enjoyed by most.

And they do love a window seat. We have wide sills; otherwise you could put a table or other furniture in front to let her sit there. We even got a bird feeder, for increased entertainment.

Well very simply, a laser pen! You can keep kittens entertained for hours with that, just be careful where you store the pen that the kitten doesn’t know where it is or the kit will be forever digging for it! Most all cats, young and old, love the laser pens1

Seve likes chasing a golf club dragged along the floor. He waits until it moves out of sight, then pounces after it. He loves his stick with some yellow feathers tied to the end, and a small grey mouse that immediately gets lost as soon as we find it. Whenever he can, he jumps up to the computer screen and pounces at the cursor. Laundry drying on racks is a great toy too, he likes to pull it onto the floor.

Ducky loves straws, lol. It does not matter if they are being used or not. He will go after them like there is no tomorrow. At times I have to keep the wrapper out so that I can distract him with that, lol. He also likes to play peak-a-boo with me. I will cover my head with a blanket and he will come up and act like ‘where did you go’ then I peak my head out, and repeat the process. ha ha

Those little balls with feathers on the end or even a little foam golf ball that rolls around on the floor are good.

Circe (in photo), likes her springs. They are kind of hard to find to we have the “ration” them out. Usually they end up in the closets, under the sofa, or her secret lair somewhere in the apartment. She loves it when we throw them on the wood floor or she’ll just bat them around herself.

The great thing about kittens and cats is that you can make a toy out of almost anything!

We’ve bought the little spongey balls, Jade loves to carry them around the house, but all the toys lately are ending up in one corner behind the recliner. I do alot of knitting, so I’ve made stuffed toys with and without catnip and they’ll bat those around (if they can bat it, they’ll play with it) and the jingle balls too. Laser pens are a blast as well.

I’ve taken empty toilet paper tubes and let them play with them as well…. just don’t give them toilet paper on the tube unless you want a mess to clean up 🙂

We bought “Da Bird” for Dave and he absolutely loves it!! As soon as Daves dad goes to the tube it stays in he knows….We were seriously thinking of entering Dave for the Olympics next year because of his athletic ability when that toy comes out!!

He also likes balls of foil, and lately, toilet rolls……

I just brought home a new kitten (almost 6 weeks old) and I got her a bunch of toys, but I have to conquer about the paper ball. Go figure!

The other big hit is this bed I got on sale at Petco for $19.99 (normally $24.99) —

I really bought it cause it looked like a cozy bed that I could turn the other way as Roxie grew, but she LOVES that fuzzy ball. She dives into that bed to get it, which is why I propped it against a chair. I think it has really helped her with her balance and is the reason she already feels comfortable jumping off the bed.

She also loves her Kitten Kong —

She lays on her back and chews it instead of my fingers.

Miss Roxy goes crazy for milk jug rings…she chirps every time I hold one up for her. I try to take it away after a day or so because she’ll break it into small pieces. Roxy is honest-to-god afraid of DaBird…I showed it to her one day and she freaked out, tail puffed out and hid under the bed for an hour! I showed it to her a couple more times with the same results so I gave it away to my aunt who has three kitties.

Sawyer loves to jump so I can hold anything above his head and he never gets tired of trying to reach it lol
