This Special Day was created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. Commemorated each year on June 5th, it is one of the principal vehicles for stimulating worldwide awareness of the environment and enhancing political attention and action.

    I found this with lynx:

Kale, here we live much closer to Bernie… Burlington VT is very close to Montréal.

Today is recycling day in my borough, but we don’t have to separate metal, glass and plastic any more. I had that Mac; wish I’d recycled its carcass as a cat bed! I simply took it to a recycling point nearby for old computers and electronics.

We have to consider endangered felines and other species, and think of all the beauty they contribute to our world.

Good morning! I love the suitcase/cat bed….we all know they love to curl up in a suitcase. Some animal show I watched once told a story of a kitty who accidentally went on vacation with her owner. (She survived the flight while trapped inside the lugggage just fine and was discovered at the hotel). I’m sure that wasn’t the first or last time that has happened.

Now that the kitchen is nearly done (just some paint touch up left) I wanted to share some before/after pics with you guys.

    Kitchen eat in area before….

We didn’t get rid of that table…me moved it to the dining room (it’s been our dining room table for years) after we found a kitchen table we loved at a consignment shop.

    Kitchen before….

It’s hard to tell how worn out the laminate countertops were…but they were in rough shape…cabinets and countertops were 30 years old and not the best quality to begin with.

    Kitchen eat in area after…

    Kitchen after….

Ive always been happy with laminate (aka “Formica”) countertops so we stuck with those and used the money saved by not going granite to make the cat window seat and little extras like the one glass door and a pull out trash can.

Wow ECB. That is quite a change and I like it! I agree on the granite countertops. Granite is nice to look at but not necessarily the best surface to work on. That was good deal on the counters and now you have, er, the kits have a new hangout.

Love the theme, and I have a great environment filled with CATS!!! I won’t comment on the ‘other’ environment, as I have nothing fluffy to say, period.

ECB, I LOVE YOUR NEW KITCHEN! The after pics are so bright and fresh looking, and I do love the cat window seat! That window should entertain your cats for hours out of a day especially if you have feeders outside the window!

And btw, I think it’s entirely possible that cats just might be solar powered!

My environment is also cat-enhanced, with the one as Dorry LOL.

I like to think that my “street-find” passion helps to contribute to the recycle movement in a very small way.

ECB your re-deco is stunning!!!!! Like something on one of those TV reno programs re before/after.

I also have laminate countertops and prefer it to granite (not that I had choice since I’m renting.) Seems easier to care for. The cupboard change makes all the difference, along with the blinds and finishing touches of course.

Plus your kitchen is HUGE!!!!!! The whole thing – gorgeous! Plus I note that the “before” kitchen is supurrvised by kits! 🙂 Do they apurrove of the reno? Considering that they have their own seat now?

Mine is just laminate too, however I have the marble top of an old-fashioned “dry sink” (where a washing basin was placed in a bedroom, before plumbing) in my kitchen, to place hot pots and also to roll out some kinds of dough that require a cold surface. That reno looks much fresher.

We’ve done a lot of work on our alley, making it a “green lane” where much is planted on either side – emergency vehicles such as fire trucks still have room to get through – having the speed limit lowered to 5kmh (walking speed) and other measures to make it safer and more pleasant for children and pets. Some ijuts were dumping trash at either end of the alley, including the front end of a small truck!

Hard to catch them, they aren’t from right here; they come in trucks by night.

It is so much nicer now, and safer for Livia. I don’t let her out at night though. Only when I’m at home and can keep an eye on her.

Ginseng café JK? Guess that it would boost up one’s bevvie some. A good thing IMHO!

In my bldg we actually have srs rules re trash disposal. Different bins for different categories. But even more srs. It seems that even in a condo where the units are not cheap (ergo I rent, which works for me), peeps had to be notified that tossing their trash in flimsy bags (which are not properly closed) is an open invite to creepy crawlies of the ant variety. Ugggg! I am very careful to only use designated trash bags, as opposed to grocery store, $$ store bags which easily rip. Especially as I am regularly tossing out litter. And I am not the only cat/pet purrson in bldg. Don’t want to risk bag ripping when it gets tossed down chute, huge mess for maintenance guy! Not everyone follows rules even with threat of responsible person having to pay for any clean-ups. Then again how would culprit be identified. Common decency has all but disappeared. 😐

Srsly pouring out! Good to be back in for duration. Fabric Ked shoes got a soaking but I used dryer to get most of wet out and then stuffed them with my srsly hard shoe forms. This should work. I do have excellent rain boots, but they did not suit today’s “look.” 🙄

Good afternoon – We are serious recyclers, and with bottles/cans/plastics one week and paper the next, our regular garbage is just one bag…oh and one bag of kitty litter!
ECB, your kitchen looks fabulous! I like that the cats ‘help’ by modeling in the photos for you.
The streetfinds you acquire and refurbish/repurpose without a doubt is a positive contribution to the environment, KJ.
On my walk today I encountered a neighbor who I worked with about 20 years ago! The conversation started with, “I have 8 cats!” replied with, “So do I!” These lake communities are weird that way, many of us don’t know people on the other side of the lake. I’ve met many people since I’ve been out walking. Also while out walking there was someone up on one of the hills honking his horn. I realized later that there was probably a bear around. Although I like seeing them, the bear(s) can stay on that side of the lake!
Discovered the interior lights on my truck wouldn’t go off, and the dash message kept telling me a door was ajar (I know, a door is a door, not a jar!). My mechanic friend took the door panel off and diagnosed a bad latch assembly. At least the computer shuts the lights off after 20 minutes.
Making lasagna for Meatless Monday! I never put meat in my lasagna, just pasta, sauce and lots of cheese!

JJ, I guess any pasta thing that I throw together would qualify for your “Meatless Monday” as in efurrday is meatless here LOL.

Good to have a mechanic friend, or anyone who can help out. The other day N re-tooled a street-find cabinet used to store tools, cleaning products, etc. Somehow it had srsly heavy metal hinges with sharp edges sticking out at each corner. And I have continual bruises where I bang into them. 🙁 Well N banged into one and after we did the ice thing I discovered that I had 4 hinges in my stock. Took like 4 hrs, with my awesome power drill/attachments and dubious assistance/encouragement, but she replaced door closures with said hinges, now the whole thing is safe and even looks better! 🙂

ECB, taking another look your 2nd pic. Just how did Eko (hope I’m correct) jump up to ceiling??? And get back down again! That has to be like over 8 ft. high. Guess it’s genetic as in panthers etc., chillin’ on tree branches. But don’t think that I’ll see Dorry trying this feat anytime soon.

KJ, there was a gap between top cabinets and the ceiling. He jumped from the counter to the top of cabinets then down the same way. Leo taught him that trick. :). Now the cabinets go to the ceiling…no more shenanigans…lol.

Glad you guys like the kitchen. We sure are enjoying it. We loved the layout and size…just needed some updating.

And Joan, they do love to model….here’s Eko by the new (fake) plant I bought to pretty up their window (only needs prettying when no cats are there, of course).

And KZ…we do have a bird feeder out that window and it is thoroughly enjoyed by cats and humans. We love that we get the same birds as our last yard…same creeks, same neighborhood, same birds. Here’s a shot where the bird feeder is showing…

ECB, tks for explanation! I was thinking Eko as Super Cat! Which he is anyway! Makes a gr8 supermodel too! 🙂

So this is another break the stress-o-meter few days for KJ. :-(. Just the way it worked out stressful appts every couple of wks over past 3 mos. Next one up on Thurs, a routine thing, but I stress out big-time, control and other issues explain it, but do not make stress go away. Then 1.5 wks to srs stressful appt. I will just have to get through.

So rschg Summer courses, even though this year’s stuff turned out to be not great in retrospect. Uni that I graduated from as McGill has a series of weekly one-off lectures, for $8/ea plus $20 reg. Might look into this one:

“What if?” The Obsession with Alternative History
In 1908, Hitler attempted in vain to join the School of Fine Arts in Vienna. What if he had been accepted and, thus, never become the leader of the Nazi Party? …
… What’s in this ‘‘what if’’? What does it tell us about our way to see the past, our wish to change it, have an alternative version? Where’s the humanity in this equation?

As in Jane Austen’s “Mansfield Park” (film/quote is stream of consciousness):
Fanny Price: It could have turned out differently, I suppose.
[All the characters pause and look thoughtful]
    Fanny Price: But it didn’t.

IMHO one of the best literary quotes.

Now the jr. college that I graduated from actually has typos in their brochure LOL. 🙄

Think I’ll go down the hall and unlock Tues Café. Then noms, which weird out when I’m stressed. Don’t anticipate getting much sleep, but lying in bed rests the body some.

(Note to self – kit looks like baby Dorry!!!)

Finally got time to get to the Cafe.
ECB I love what you have done with the kitchen and informal dining area. So light and bright now and that window seat area for the cats is awesome. Formica is great. When we did up the kitchen some years ago we went for formica as it allowed us to save money to spend elsewhere.
I like granite to stay in nature.
JK, ginseng coffee. I bet that wakes you up.
I was just reading this today,
    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/news/article.cfm?c_id=6&objectid=11870394 Shudder.
    LOL on the cloud musing.
Had another great morning feeding out to the stock amidst a ground fog. Very pretty. Saw more birds I don’t usually see in town.
Mr MS is home from work and lighting the firs while HRH is sitting my feet meowing for dinner. She has already had the offcuts of beef from when I was preparing dinner for the slowcooker earlier today but now she wants more human beef and is not interested in the cat beef I am offering. Silly girl, it’s all the same.
We recycle everything that we can, paper, cardboard, plastics, glass and cans. As the recycling centre is near us we collect them in bins and then take them down ourselves when we can. There is also a greenwaste recycling area for garden waste which is then processed into compost and sold by the bag. That we do ourselves at home.
