Hi, My name is Peg and I am new to the forum, although I have been coming to TDK for a long time. I have one cat now, Ashton, who is 14 and has the beginnings of kidney disease. Ashton lost his companion Callie, who was also 14, last summer and is now starting to act depressed and like he would like to have another companion. Thanks to TDK and Pam, tomorrow I am adopting Comet, who was featured last week with his sister, Luna. I can hardly wait to get him and I think he will be fun for Ashton to have around. I know there may be a few problems but I can put Comet into the bathroom when I need to be gone, if I need to keep them apart for a while. I hope everything goes well with this adoption. I still can’t believe no one else wanted Comet – he is so cute!

Welcome Peg! Oh, Comet’s a beautiful boy. I’m a sucker for orange boycats. (Any chance you could take sister Luna too?)

My first orange boycat, Sid (for Siddhartha) slept on my pillow from the first night we had him. I loved it and encouraged it. Even up to his last days, Sid would sleep on my pillow. The love of orange kitties is so deep, so unconditional, that you’re going to have a special friend for many many years.

Your older kitty may not like the rambunctiousness of little Comet at first, but I think it’s great to get an older kitty a young companion. Sometimes you might see the older one play like a kitten again, and it’s so rewarding to see them act so much younger than their chronological age.

If you like, on Catster, there is a forum for older kitties, called “Olde Furts”. I have an old furt: Tansey is 16. She was 10 when we got a kitten, and she still plays like a baby herself.

Welcome Peg! Sorry for the loss of Callie; they leave such a big pawprint on our hearts, don’t they? Anyway, I’m so glad you decided to get a pal for Ashton. Welcome Comet!

Welcome to TDK Peg! Good luck with intergrating Comet into the family, can I recommend a product called Feliway? It’s a synthetic feline hormone, and very good at easing stressful/anxious situations (for cats not for humans unfortunately!!). It’s available in a spray, but I’ve found the plug in diffuser much, much better whenever I’ve used it. Keep us posted, and again, welcome out of the lurking shadows!!

I picked up Comet today. I plan to rename him Sunny because he is really more of a sunshine gold and he seems to respond very well to his new name. He is a BIG boy – he is 6-1/2 months old now but was 6.7 lbs at 4 months! I already love him and Ashton has met him face to face with no fighting. However, Sunny will stay in the bathroom most of the time for a while until they seem comfortable together. Ashton was not real sure of the situation at this point.
