I got these two new kittens from a farm a little ways outside of my town a couple weeks ago and the youngest Jessie just died this morning and I don’t know why. I wasn’t at home and my mom called and told me that she found Jessie on my bed and she had diarrhea and she was laying there barely breathing then she died. If anyone has any idea what happened could you please share it with me. I would like to know if I did anything wrong.

    Hi Lizzy,

I’m very sorry your wee kitty passed away. I believe that your girl had what’s called Fading Kitten Syndrome (FKS).

There may or may not be obvious signs that a kitten has it. FKS is not a disease. It is a collection of symptoms, the very first of which might be the unexplained death of a very young kitten. In that respect, it has been compared to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Sydrome) in human babies. It may require Draconian efforts to save a kitten in the throes of Fading Kitten Syndrome, and often even that will not be enough. We can’t save them all, so if the worse happens, take solace in the knowledge that the kitten is no longer suffering, but at peace.

You and your mom gave her love and care for her short life. She will always remember your kindnesses.

I’m very sorry for the loss of little Jessie. It doesn’t sound like you did anything wrong; the battles tiny kittens face are just too much for some.

    Hi Jessie,

No one can ever truly know why such tragedies – or anything for that matter happens. 🙁 As mentioned in above posts tiny kitties are in a precarious state and some don’t make it despite all your caring and efforts. All I can say is that at TDK we understand your grief over the loss of wee Jessie. If if brings comfort know that in her all too short life your kitty felt your love and and your Mom’s. For sure this counts for something.

I’m so Very sorry for your loss 🙁 as PG stated she could have developed FKS ..one minute you can be dealing with a healthy playful kitten and an hour or two later they can be at deaths door.. and in a lot of cases even if caught early and with every medical intervention it sometimes isn’t enough to save them.. Kittens up to 10-12 weeks can suffer from FKS and it’s more common in cats that are born in the wild/farm yard cats etc.. the diarrhoea may have been caused by several things parasites being one.. if you haven’t gotten a kitten wormer from your vet (don’t buy in store wormer only get one from vet and they’ll need to weigh kitten for correct dose) I would recommend doing that as kittens ideally are meant to be treated for worms from as early as 2 weeks old (liquid gentle wormer med) and then every 2-3 weeks up untill 10-12 weeks old and then once a month up until 6 months old..

If you ever think this is happening ago an with any other kitten (I truly hope it doesn’t) then always have some honey close to hand and rub a little into their gums sometimes that natural sugar hit is enough to snap them out of it or at least get enough time to get to vet
