My mum’s cat, Abby, was 17 when she started having small strokes. The main sign was that she fell over — her hindquarters stopped working for a few minutes and she couldn’t walk. It only lasted a few minutes and then she seemed okay again. The vet gave her the all clear but then it happened again when we got her home and the vet realised what was happening. Not wanting to worry you, but if you think that your cat might really be having episodes when her hindquarters don’t work, and not just pretending, I would take her to the vet. Best of luck, PK.

Juuei is estimated to be 5-11 years old. My ex-cat lived 17 healthy years.

My oldest is 13 1/2. He has always been a loner except when he wants attention. He sleeps most of the time but is always there at feeding time.

Shadz is 6 going on 7, but a previous cat called ‘Whitefoots’ was 18 when she went over the bridge as was our dog ‘Nellie’. Our next cat ‘Sharp’ was an adoptee so we had no idea of his age when cancer took him.

Jiggs was 16 when he died in January, and Shaddo was 17 when he died in June. Their baby sister, Leela, is a whopping 4 months old.

wow, lots of old kitties. She is more active this morning (or at least she moved from the bedroom to the kitchen sink). I am truly entering new territory with her as I have never had any this old before. My parents said Little Marb had her kittens at 1:30 this morning, on their bed! Don’t know how many yet – will have to call them when they get up.

My little girl Tansey will be fifteen on Labor Day weekend! She can’t “fly” like she used to, her jumping mechanisms are getting old (she has kitty arthritis in her little kitty hips). She’s still VERY active, very vocal. She has her “hurting days” like all of us with arthritis, but she has a whole lot of Most Excellent kitty days(tm)

that arthritis is what I am thinking is going on with her – she just moves like she is old and stiff. If she is expecially hurting, that may explain her disinterest in food. I think i will get some pedialyte tonight at work (I work at walmart) just in case.

You might want to look into Kitty Cosequin too. I got the kind that is a powder in a capsule, sprinkle it on the food. Tansey is very savvy and won’t take meds like that, but she doesn’t mind the Cosequin, she just chomps right through it. You can get it at a savings over the vet, if you look online.

My oldest and very first cat ever is 3 1/2 years old… 🙂 I’s suggest just taking your cat in for an exam…it’s better to be safe than sorry and put your mind to rest. But then again, I haven’t had an older cat so I’m not sure if it is normal behavior. My opinion is if there is a change in behavior, then you kitty might have a medical issue. You could always call your vet on the phone and describe the issue…they usually give free advice on the phone.

First I agree with everyone else, you should take your kitty to the vet. My oldest right now is 14

Mum’s cat Bones is hovering around the 19 mark – he had thyroid trouble which was sorted out, and is on medication for kidney trouble, but he continues to astound our vet by doing so well regardless!

Definitely at least speak to your vet, and consider having bloodtests done – it maybe nothing, it may be something, but if it’s caught early, it shouldn’t be serious.

Bastian lived to be 13 but had renal failure.

Fred, we think is about 9-10…he has been with us for 8 years already.

    Cricket is just 3.

Redford will be 17 in Oct. and Mitzi just turned 16. Redford has chronic renal failure, but we give him sub-q ringers lactate every night and he still plays like a kitten, chasing his sis, tossing toys, etc. Mitzi is very healthy and ALWAYS interested in her food and in annoying her brother!

My Sebatian lived to be 18 years old but his little kidneys gave out. Now Maverick is the oldest and he’s only 12. Huddy’s still a baby at 4.

Rainingwolf, my Mum has a Mitzi, she was 19 last week. She adopted her when her family moved away to a Pacific island to run a hotel. They were told that she wouldn’t be able to take the heat there. It is winter here and Mitzi spends it almost curled around the heater.

My first and oldest is Chloe, and she is 5 1/2. Mili is just over 1. I have no experience at all with older kitties. Sometimes I think Chloe acts like she is a crotchety old lady of 90! LOL
