I just got my kitten Lola, about a week ago. She is nine weeks old, and the person I got her from said she has be de-wormed, and seen a vet. She was free, so I highly doubted this. After a few days, I sent him a text asking which vet she had been too. And he said she hasn’t seen one.
I am now very worried, I cannot really afford to take her to the vet right now, until my boyfriend and I save a bit of money.
However, I was wondering if there are any signs of her having worms, or being unhealthy.
Just so I can maybe stop panicking!

She is very playful, she will play for a few hours, then nap for an hour. When I say playful, I mean like, out right insanely energetic. She climbs walls, people, jumps four feet in the air to try and catch flies. and she loves anything with a string.
I feed her two spoons of wet whiskas food every morning, lunch, and dinner, and she usually eats everything in her dish.
I haven’t seen her drink very much water, although she will lick at it once or twice when I change her water. I assume she is drining, because she pees about three – four times a day. She poops normally, usually solid. I’ve inspected her poops for worms, and haven’t found anything.
She doesn’t have a rounded belly, and she doesn’t bleed or anything when she poops.
Yesterday she pooped on my bed, and it was half solid and half mushy.

I’m very concerned, and need a little advice. I have called all the vets in my area and they all cost about $300 – $400 for first visit, because they do microchipping, vaccines, a check up, and de-worming. I really can’t afford that, and I really hate that I wasn’t informed about her not being examined.

cheyenne, one of my cats had worms once. she would drag her bum round, scratching and had very bad diarrhea. at the time i didn’t know why either. i eventually actually saw the little worms coming out of her butt, at which point, i went and got over the counter dewormer. it did help and she was ok afterward. this could be an option, but believe me, if she has worms you will probably be well aware of it. you will most likely see it. the link jean sent is very good

    Hi Cheyanne 🙂

So as of now we know she hasn’t been to the vet but it is possible she has already been wormed .. A lot of people will buy store bought wormers but they aren’t really a broad spectrum wormer so don’t kill all parasites that a kitten can come into contact with ( usually from mother cat)

You can ask your vet for just the wormer and I reccomended only using the wormers a vet prescribes .. Once you know her weight and age you can ask for a suitable worming tablet.. And maybe make an appointment for a months time for her vaccinations.. Make sure to keep her inside until she is vaccinated and has no contact with other outdoor cats until vaccinated..

I would worm her as not all parasites are visible in stool samples and it almost a guarantee all kittens have worms and parisites ( again from mother)

And not all parisites cause bloating

As for the wet food for me it’s the best diet for any cat if you can give a raw food diet.. Most cats wont drink a lot when eating wet food they get most of their days moisture from the food.. I always add a little water to my buttons wet food just to be sure he’s well hydrated and fresh water always left out too.. In a ceramic/ glass/ stainless steel bowl ( avoid plastic bowls)

Do any of you happen to know how much the de-worming stuff costs? I am going to call around to a few vets tomorrow and ask about it. I had her outside once and she hated it, so i don’t think i’ll be bringing her out again, all her dishes are ceramic.
    Thank you for the advice

If your lucky enough to have a cat that doesn’t want to go outside I would keep it that way ! Be prepared though I she isn’t spayed by the time she goes into heat ( anywhere from 4-7 months) she WILL attempt escape because she will be in season and will stop at nothing to get outside and then you have major the danger of her being exposed to some really nasty life threatening virus’s (FIV,FIP, and worst of all FeLV plus many more) so start saving now for the spaying and hopefully your vet will spay her at 4-5 months..

As for wormer cost it normally ranges from $3-$10 and some spot on flea treatments are combos and target parasites and fleas ( also biting lice and mites) too but they’re more expensive ($10+) and generally aimed at cats over the 15 week mark.. But flea only spray and spot on treatments can be supplied for kittens 4weeks of age and up..
