My 3 week old kitten named Fred (as in Fred and George from Harry Potter) has been lethargic (starting two-ish days ago)and no longer walks around or really moves. Fred just keeps sleeping and they appear to be having issues breathing as they are breathing hard whenever they sleep, which is almost always. Fred’s gums are really pale, they have watery eyes, and a dry nose. Fred also does not like to be touched. the mamma cat (Mia) has also become a little lethargic. I have no idea what to do. Mia’s last litter was completely fine, I dont know what changed.

Another quick note: another kitten named Cottonball showed similar symptoms (except for the not moving part) and died recently. 🙁

Get them to a vet straight away. If you cant afford this try your local cat/animal shelter. Sounds like something contagious for cats. Is the mother vaccinated?

The mother is not vaccinated, Fred sadly died in my arms a few minutes ago.

If you can rub some honey, syrup, or sugar water on their gums and tongue to perk them up. When cats don’t eat regularly, their sugar levels drop. Then get some formula into them ASAP if they appear like they will take it. The vet is the next step, as it sound like an upper respiratory infection for the mother and the kits. I’m so sorry for the loss of little Fred. It could also be FKS (Fading Kitten Syndrome) and seemingly healthy kittens die for no apparent reason. It’s heartbreaking and I hope you can save them.

None of the other kittens have shown any symptoms, but if they do I’ll try that, thank you. I really hope I can help them.

is mamma eating? i’ve always heard to feed nursing mom’s kitten food so that she has enough energy to feed the kits maybe that will help mom. also get some goats milk for the kits as you start weaning them to mix with the wet food and it’s something mom will like. it has natural lysine which if it is an upper respitory infection will help treat it. I also use the powdered lysine in my kits wet food and in less than 1 month their eyes cleared up and i never had to get eye drops from the vet like we did with another cat last year. just some ideas. i’ve researched a lot about the feline herpes and dealt with it in 5 kits so far and my baby is a 5 day old orphan so no signs yet of an uri but i know how to treat and she gets goats milk instead of KMR for this main reason. good luck with all your babies
